Purley Oaks
Political issues - NPOV
Hi, Mrstevier, having removed the following:
"Consequently, there is a strong will within Purley to leave the borough and return to independent district status which would mean planning decisions (the most controversial issue) would be made by local citizens. The sale and conversion of the Purley town hall (pictured) which might have quashed such ambition has instead increased the resolve of many local residents to secede from the London Borough of Croydon", are you sure this was POV? I think you were pretty high-handed removing this part of the para. Please give reason why you think it was POV. Have you looked into this, or is this a notion you dislike personally, thus including your own POV reasons for removing that part of the article? Or is it the word secede that bothers you? That can always be replaced by another word. You need to give a reason, Mrs. I, for one would be grateful. Dieter Simon 00:32, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
:Sorry not to put a note in talk - I thought it was obvious. There is no source for this and wiki is not a soapbox. I'll clarify the phrases causing most problems:
:there is a strong will within Purley
:increased the resolve of many local residents
:How is this measured or documented? What %age want this? Is there a survey? Is this just a feeling the author has? Sounds like POV. Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_soapbox. MRSC 06:54, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
::I support the statement's removal as it is unsubstantiated and, if factual, deserves a place on Croydon or Croydon Council, not as a footnote on one page about the south of the borough.
::However, at the last meeting of Croydon Council (18th July), a Conservative Party councillor ended a speech with something akin to "...and that is why so many people in the South would like to split from Croydon rather than be dominated by Labour in the north [of Croydon]". The Tories all cheered but it was a point made in sarcasm and it is that kind of petty point-scoring meeting on both sides (available to view on webcast on [http://www.croydon.gov.uk Croydon Council website]).
::I have not heard this as a serious proposal from anyone in the south, but I have heard several people in north Croydon suggest this, perhaps ironically. I have seen no discussion of this idea in the Croydon Advertiser or the journals of the local civic societies such as the Croydon or Bourne Societies. The only proposals out there are by Ken Livingstone who wishes to see eight London Boroughs stretching to the M25, the Association of London Government who want to keep things as they are but focus on new powers for councils, and the government who put in their manifesto that they want parish councils for London, but have not explained any further than that. :::That's good enough for me, then, I too support the removal. I can't recall seeing mention in the local press either, however I thought I'd make sure just in case I hadn't heard. Dieter Simon 23:55, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
How high above sea level is Purley?
I am a resident of Purley and i was just wondering if anyone knew how high above sea level it is. I have looked for contour meps on the internet but i cannot find any. All help is appreciated. :-)
::It's between 500 and 600 feet above sea level. Don't forget Purley is embedded in the North Downs to a certain extent. It's therefore essential to know which parts of Purley you are referring to. Dieter Simon 00:39, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
Schools
How about a list of all the schools in Purley?Breakfast100 18:58, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Merge proposal: [[Laleham Lea Primary School]]
It has been suggested that Laleham Lea Primary School be merged here.
- Possibly does not meet WP:GNG and WP:ORG criteria for standalone page.
- Merge/redirect may be possible as per WP:WPSCH 'outcomes'.
Please add your Support, Oppose, or Comment in a bulleted list below.
- Support - unless reliable sources can be found that clearly assert notability. --Kudpung (talk) 08:29, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Toponym
I am about to remove some information from the toponym section regarding Purley Farm, the Carew family etc. I am putting this talk section for reference as to why. The information appears to be for the wrong Purley. See for instance [https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/berks/vol3/pp417-422]. It is Purley Berkshire. Purley Surrey in what was Sanderstead parish is named for the estate deeded in 1200 as per the source I found. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 22:14, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
Monty Python
Nothing about its use in the “Nudge Nudge” sketch?
Does Purley have some sort of reputation? Or is it supposed to be so boring that anyone thinking that girls from there are ‘fast’ knows nothing and is a complete poser? That is sort of the point of the sketch. Some reference would be useful, since it is why many people have heard of the place.
Say no more! 2601:647:667F:8610:8551:FD3A:8C5D:5EF5 (talk) 01:56, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
GA Nomination
I have nominated this article for GA status. Ahead of that review, if anyone wants to discuss areas it can be sharpened up to ensure success, please do discuss here. I have not taken an article through this before, but I believe it meets the Wikipedia:Good article criteria because:
- Well-written - the prose meets the criteria, and I am not aware of any MOS issues.
- Verifiable with no original research - It is very well referenced now and I think I weeded out any OR. Definitely should not be any copyvios in there.
- Broad in its coverage - I think it broadly covers all aspects of Purley, whilst retaining focus.
- Neutral - We have had no neutrality issues and non neutral descriptions have been removed.
- Stable - It has been stable over a long period.
- Illustrated - It contains a range of relevant illustrations
However that is my view, and as I say, if anyone feels we can smarten it up a touch more to ensure success, please do discuss. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 10:48, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Location
Purley is in the county of Surrey. It is NOT in London. 82.39.4.238 (talk) 18:19, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
:Incorrect. Take a look at the page, the Local Government section. Click source 5. Note that Purley became part of the London borough of Croydon in 1965. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 18:43, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
