I will review this for GA. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:05, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

Nice short article with needed discussion and info about how COVID affected a figure skating competition, the kind of documentation that needs to happen.

  1. Is it well written?
  2. :A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct: {{GAList/check|y}}
  3. :: See my comments about some of the prose below.
  4. :B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation: {{GAList/check|y}}
  5. :: I think that the lead is a little long for the length of this article. The word count for the prose is 532 words; according to Wikipedia:WikiProject Lead Improvement Team, articles with less than 2,500 words should have two paragraphs. I think you could either delete the third paragraph in the lead or place it at the beginning of the "Medalists" section, before the tables. Of course, it's preferable if you could find references for all those statements, but I understand, based on other reviews I've done of your work, that you're okay with summarizing the content in tables like this, so I won't require it for this GAN.

:::The lead follows the same format as all other figure skating competition articles, including, for example, Skate America, which was promoted to GA. I think the reason the lead seems longer than usual is that there are so many ice dance teams who are tied. This format of the lead underwent a number of revisions during the Featured List evaluations of Ukrainian Figure Skating Championships and European Figure Skating Championships (the first two article to go up for FL nomination). I'm really adverse to altering it in this case because I really feel like all of these articles should follow the same format.

:::All of the records are sourced on the table toward the end of the article. I was advised at the Featured List project that the lead should not have linked sources if they are provided later in the article. Bgsu98 (Talk) 19:01, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

:::I have combined the first two paragraphs into one since the second paragraph was kind of short. Bgsu98 (Talk) 20:00, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

::::I think combining the paragraphs make it look much better. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 21:29, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

  1. Is it verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check?
  2. :A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline: {{GAList/check|y}}
  3. ::
  4. :B. Reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose): {{GAList/check|y}}
  5. :: See my comments below.
  6. :C. It contains no original research: {{GAList/check|y}}
  7. ::
  8. :D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism: {{GAList/check|y}}
  9. ::
  10. Is it broad in its coverage?
  11. :A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic: {{GAList/check|y}}
  12. :: You focus a lot on the effects that the pandemic had on this competition, something that's vitally important to record on WP, as I state above. I wonder if this violates WP:WEIGHT, though. Is there any more information out there about other notable Rostelecom Cups? If there isn't, that's fine. I just bring it up in order for this review to be comprehensive.

:::It's just that no other installments of the Rostelecom Cup, so far as I know, were particularly notable. As you know, most of these competitions take place and they're just like every other. The Grand Prix de France, on the other hand, had lots of background on the different sponsors, changes of venue, its role as an Olympic test event – the Rostelecom Cup wasn't even a test event for the Sochi Olympics – the Paris terrorist attacks, COVID, etc. All we really have here is the COVID debacle and the ISU yoinking Russia's right to host the competition is 2022, which is still more impressive than the NHK Trophy. But I digress... Bgsu98 (Talk) 19:01, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

::::You've answered my question, that's kinda what I thought. Ya gotta follow the sources, and I'll AGF that you have in this instance. However...I've always thought that the content from the sources about individual competitions could be incorporated into their articles. OTOH, that content may not be relevant. It's something that I need to try myself to test if my theory is correct, something I'm not willing to take on because I'm interested in other aspects of writing about fs on WP, so I won't press it for this GAN.   1. :B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style): {{GAList/check|y}}
  2. ::
  3. Is it neutral?
  4. :It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each: {{GAList/check|y}}
  5. ::
  6. Is it stable?
  7. : It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute: {{GAList/check|y}}
  8. :: Very stable, with little controversy on its talk page and contribution history, with the nominator as the main editor recently.
  9. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
  10. :A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content: {{GAList/check|y}}
  11. :: The images are excellent.
  12. :B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions: {{GAList/check|y}}
  13. ::
  14. Overall:
  15. :Pass or Fail: {{GAList/check|y}}
  16. :: Good start, with lots of great things; will pass after my comments are addressed. Nice job, as always.
  • Ref3 says nothing about the event's sponsor, so either find a source or remove the statement, please.

:Better source located. Bgsu98 (Talk) 19:30, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

::Ok, not a great source, since it doesn't state anything about the name change and when it happened, but its mention is good enough.

  • Ref5a: The source says nothing about the buffet being a superspreader event. It does state, however, that three skaters had gotten COVID but competed at the Rostelecom Cup anyway and that a buffet had occurred after the competition. I think you should change the wording to better reflect how the source described what happened.
  • "Despite some precautionary measures being taken, the organizers of the Rostelecom Cup, as with many other Russian domestic competitions during the season, came under criticism for allowing a large audience and an insufficient enforcement of mandates regarding social distancing and proper mask usage." Ref5 doesn't support this statement. Ref9, though, does a better job describing the controversy about how Russia handled the ISU's limits and rules surrounding competing during COVID. A better choice would be to summarize what that source states.

:These two kind of go together. I can see what you mean. It would appear that information from the two sources was comingled together. I have added linked sources to each statement. Bgsu98 (Talk) 19:30, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

::Actually, a better term to describe what happened is "synthesis", something we're not supposed to do, according to WP:SYNTH, part of the NOR policy. Much better now. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:14, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

:::Yes, "synthesis", that's it. Bgsu98 (Talk) 22:41, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

  • Cumulative medal count section: No sources for this section. We've agreed to disagree about the summary of the scores you do here, but I'd like to go on the record here that personally, I don't care for it. I won't let it get in the way of the promotion of this article to GA, though. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:33, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

User:Figureskatingfan: I have made some general rewrites to the prose. I also added the event's logo, and an image from the 2020 Rostelecom Cup demonstrating improper COVID protocols. It's possible I may have missed some things; please let me know what else you would like me to address. Thank you as always for your feedback! Bgsu98 (Talk) 21:44, 21 June 2025 (UTC)

:User:Figureskatingfan: Actually, I've removed the photo. It's more appropriate to the 2020 Rostelecom Cup article, but is not needed here. Bgsu98 (Talk) 17:26, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

::I'm happy with your changes. I saw the photo you added, but didn't have time to respond to its addition. After thinking about it a bit offline, I was going to come back and express my opinion that it didn't really work for this article. For me, the issue isn't that it was from the 2020 RC, but that its inclusion isn't really appropriate and makes the people in the photo look bad. I mean, they could've been in the middle of putting the masks on, so it's unfair to shine light on what might not have been inappropriate behavior. It also creates MOS:SANDWICH, so it's good that you removed it.

:: I'm happy with your changes, and will happily pass this article to GA now. Good work, glad I was able to assist. (Happy, happy--joy, joy). ;) Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:14, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

:::User:Figureskatingfan, I don't know if you are doing these in chronological order, but I would be interested in seeing your take on one of the specific event articles I have sent through. Bgsu98 (Talk) 22:42, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

::::@Bgsu98, yah that's exactly what I was doing. I guess I figured it was as good an order as any, or that I assumed you had listed them in order of importance. And yah, I could do that. I have some other projects to take care of and some added RL responsibilities coming up, but I'll tackle a GAN about a specific event in the next week or so. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 23:15, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

:::::I have them listed in chronological order; there really is no order of importance. Bgsu98 (Talk) 23:17, 22 June 2025 (UTC)
