Tambores is a small town partly in the Paysandú Department and partly in the Tacuarembó Department of western Uruguay.

Geography

It is located on both sides of the interdepartmental road which forms the border between the two departments, {{convert|8|km}} south of its intersection with Route 26, which lies {{convert|33|km}} southwest of Tacuarembó, the capital city of the department. The railroad track Montevideo - Tacuarembó - Rivera passes through the town.{{cn|date=February 2023}}

History

On 21 August 1936, the existing populated nucleus here was elevated to "Pueblo" (village) by the Act of Ley N° 9.588.{{cite web |url=http://www0.parlamento.gub.uy/leyes/AccesoTextoLey.asp?Ley=9588 |title=Ley Nº 9.588 |publisher=República Oriental del Uruguay, Poder Legislativo |date=1936 |accessdate=4 September 2012 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304114553/http://www0.parlamento.gub.uy/leyes/AccesoTextoLey.asp?Ley=9588 |archivedate=4 March 2016 }} Until then, it had been head of the judicial section of "Salsipuedes".
