Following the band's 2011 reunion and release of the Shoot EP in 2013, an IndieGoGo campaign was started in 2014 as to fund the creation of the album;{{cite web|url=https://www.indiegogocom/projects/help-american-head-charge-record-their-new-album#home |title=Help American Head Charge Record Their New Album! |website=Indiegogo dot com |date=March 25, 2014 |access-date=April 20, 2014}}{{Cite web|url=https://archive.blabbermouth.net/cdreviews/tango-umbrella/|title=Tango Umbrella - AMERICAN HEAD CHARGE|date=July 9, 2016|website=BLABBERMOUTH.NET}} the target was exceeded by over 110%.
According to the band, "We touched upon different directions. Our influences come from the early '90s -- Ministry, Tool, PJ Harvey and so forth. We cover a lot on Tango Umbrella. If people dig it -- cool. If not: Go F Yourself!"{{Cite web|url=https://loudwire.com/american-head-charge-tango-umbrella-exclusive-album-stream/|title=American Head Charge, 'Tango Umbrella' - Album Stream|first=Chad|last=Childers|website=Loudwire}}
