At the 2016 Olympics he was eliminated in the heats of the 3000 m steeplechase.

Milne first appeared and competed as part of the national team at the 2006 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, where he placed twenty-eighth in the men's senior eight kilometre run.{{cite news|title=Canada wins two gold medals at NACAC cross country running championships|url=http://www.athletics.ca/display_news.asp?newsid=147|publisher=Athletics Canada|date=March 12, 2006|accessdate=December 12, 2012}}{{cite web|last=Kelsall|first=Christopher|title=Taylor Milne|url=http://athleticsillustrated.com/interviews/taylor-milne/|publisher=Athletics Illustrated|date=February 15, 2012|accessdate=December 12, 2012}} In 2008, he set his personal best time and an equal Olympic A-standard of 3:36.00 by winning the 1500 metres at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic in Burnaby, British Columbia, which earned him a qualifying spot for the Summer Olympics in Beijing.{{cite news|title=Canada 's Milne surprises at Harry Jerome Track Classic|url=http://www.cscontario.ca/web_page/news.php?id=dft848|publisher=Canadian Sport Institute|date=June 21, 2008|accessdate=December 12, 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090108073917/http://www.cscontario.ca/web_page/news.php?id=dft848|archive-date=January 8, 2009|url-status=dead}} Two weeks later, Milne captured another title and set a new championship meet record of 3:38.03 at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Windsor, Ontario, to fully secure his place for the Olympics, along with fellow athletes Nathan Brannen and Kevin Sullivan, who he considered to be his personal hero.{{cite news|title=Milne punches ticket to Olympic Games|url=http://www.nugget.ca/2008/07/06/milne-punches-ticket-to-olympic-games|publisher=Nugget Canada|date=July 6, 2008|accessdate=December 12, 2012}}

At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Milne ran in the first heat of men's 1500 metres, against ten other athletes, including Leonel Manzano of the United States, and New Zealand's Nick Willis, who eventually won the silver medal in the final. He finished the race in ninth place by approximately two seconds behind Reyes Estévez of Spain, outside his personal best of 3:41.56. Milne, unlike his two other teammates, failed to advance into the semi-finals, as he ranked below five mandatory qualifying slots for the next round.{{cite web|title=Men's 1500m Round 1 – Heat 1|url=http://www.2008.nbcolympics.com/trackandfield/resultsandschedules/rsc=ATM015900/index.html|publisher=NBC Olympics|accessdate=December 12, 2012|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120821021042/http://www.2008.nbcolympics.com/trackandfield/resultsandschedules/rsc%3DATM015900/index.html|archivedate=August 21, 2012|df=mdy-all}}{{cite news|last=Kingston|first=Gary|title=Canadian runner Taylor Milne eyes Olympic berth and payoff on big bet|url=https://vancouversun.com/sports/Canadian+runner+Taylor+Milne+eyes+Olympic+berth+payoff/6751501/story.html|publisher=The Vancouver Sun|date=June 8, 2012|accessdate=December 12, 2012}}

Milne also sought to qualify for his second Olympic games in London; however, he failed to attain an Olympic A-standard of 3:35.50, and finished behind Brannen at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Calgary, Alberta, outside further from his personal best time of 3:50.07.{{cite news|title=Relaxed Nate Brannen follows plan to London|url=http://www.therecord.com/sports/local/article/752921--relaxed-nate-brannen-follows-plan-to-london|publisher=The Record (Canada)|date=June 30, 2012|accessdate=December 12, 2012}}
