Synthesis

The compound can be synthesised by heating of technetium powder in a jet of fluorine diluted with nitrogen:

::{{chem2|2Tc + 5F2 -> 2TcF5}}

Another way to prepare it is the effect of iodine on technetium hexafluoride solution in iodine pentafluoride:{{cite book |last1=Schwochau |first1=Klaus |title=Technetium: Chemistry and Radiopharmaceutical Applications |date=21 November 2008 |publisher=John Wiley & Sons |isbn=978-3-527-61337-3 |page=114 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=g3QiV8Wr5ToC&dq=technetium+pentafluoride+prepared&pg=PA114 |access-date=19 April 2023 |language=en}}

::{{chem2|2TcF6 + I2 -> 2TcF5 + 2IF}}
