  • Comment: ALT1 reads a bit clunkily, I suggest revising to something along the lines of:

: ALT1a: ... that while San Jose State University has a varsity women's volleyball team, men's volleyball is a non-varsity sport at the university?

:SammySpartan (talk) 20:05, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

::We could go even tighter than that. ALT1b: ... that San Jose State University has a varsity women's volleyball team but not a men's?--Launchballer 20:10, 3 January 2025 (UTC)

16px Article is new enough, long enough, and within policy. No copyright violations detected. The original hook doesn't stike me as interesting but I think Alt1B is interesting. My only issue is I am having a hard time verifying the hook. The cited reference is a main page for the team but without any text/prose. What am I looking for here? Maybe this is something obvious to someone who understands sports teams but I'm not seeing the term non-varsity used anywhere. Do we have a source that verifies this using that language? If so where?4meter4 (talk) 01:18, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

  • I'll leave the varsity part to others (since I didn't add that part), but I think if we were to clarify in the article, we could make ALT0 more interesting. The team won 14 games and per ESPN, [https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/42605069/sjsu-6-forfeit-wins-gets-bye-mwc-volleyball-tourney 6] were by forfeit. We could then do a hook of ALT2 ... that nearly half of the wins of the San Jose State Spartans women's volleyball team in 2024 were by forfeit?, which I think is interesting. ::@{{u|BeanieFan11}} I think that Alt2 would work. The entire hook fact is better supported in this source: https://apnews.com/article/san-jose-state-volleyball-d00b36355c69f48de712339821682b52 I think we would need the hook fact stated more explicitly with an inline citation in the 2024 season section. Once that is done ping me.4meter4 (talk) 02:28, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

  • Comment: Understanding the varsity/non-varsity distinction would need local knowledge. It's unlikley to make sense to large numbers of readers. --Northernhenge (talk) 16:52, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

::That's a good point. I'm striking it as rejected per this assessment. Alt2 is the better choice. @{{u|BeanieFan11}} Please let me know when the Alt2 hook fact has been added to the article with an inline citation.4meter4 (talk) 17:28, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

16px Approving Alt2 hook only. This hook is ready for promotion.4meter4 (talk) 03:14, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
