Critical reception

Mike DeGagne from AllMusic felt that songs like "That's What I Think" "make for the most promising" of the 11 cuts on the Hat Full of Stars album.{{cite web|first= Mike |last= DeGagne |title= Cyndi Lauper – A Hat Full of Stars |publisher= AllMusic |date= |accessdate= November 4, 2020 |url= https://www.allmusic.com/album/a-hat-full-of-stars-mw0000100028}} Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "With this funk-injected pop shuffler, Lauper offers what may be her most accessible and charming single in a long time." He added, "A husky vocal is framed by wriggling guitars and flourishing horns, seeping into a neat, muscular bassline. And the cute chorus is a fun sing-along."{{cite magazine|first= Larry |last= Flick |title= Single Reviews |magazine= Billboard |date= October 30, 1993 |page= 61 |accessdate= October 27, 2020 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/90s/1993/BB-1993-10-30-N.pdf |author-link= Larry Flick}} In a 2014 review, the Daily Vault's Mark Millan called it as a very good song and a "blunt social commentary if ever there was one".{{cite web|first= Mark |last= Millan |title= Hat Full Of Stars – Cyndi Lauper |publisher= The Daily Vault |date= February 24, 2014 |accessdate= November 20, 2020 |url= http://dailyvault.com/toc.php5?review=8203}} In his weekly UK chart commentary, James Masterton complimented it as a "cleverly constructed track".{{cite web|last=Masterton|first=James|title=Week Ending November 13th 1993|url=https://chart-watch.uk/archives/1993/week-ending-november-13th-1993|website=Chart Watch UK|date=November 7, 1993|accessdate=September 12, 2021|author-link=James Masterton}} Holly George Warren of Rolling Stone noted Lauper's "throaty belting".{{cite magazine |url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/a-hat-full-of-stars-19930902 |title=Cyndi Lauper: Hat Full Of Stars |first=Holly |last=George-Warren |date=September 2, 1993 |magazine=Rolling Stone |publisher=Straight Arrow |issn=0035-791X |accessdate=October 10, 2011}} Music & Media commented that "under the productional jiggery pokery, you'll find a vintage Lauper song".{{cite magazine|magazine=Music & Media|date=November 6, 1993|volume=10|number=45|title=New Releases|page=12|url=https://www.worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-and-Media/90s/1993/MM-1993-11-06.pdf|access-date=January 8, 2025}}
