The Knife is the seventh studio album by American ska punk band Goldfinger, released on July 21, 2017, through Rise Records. It marks the band's first album following a nine-year non-album gap, their longest ever. It is their first release featuring their new supergroup line-up consisting of guitarist/vocalist and founding member John Feldmann, lead guitarist Philip Sneed (Story of the Year), bassist Mike Herrera (MxPx, Mike Herrera's Tumbledown) and drummer Travis Barker (Blink-182). There are also several notable musicians who make guest appearances on the album.{{cite web|last1=Dickman|first1=Maggie|title=Goldfinger announce first new album in nine years, 'The Knife'—listen to the first single|url=http://www.altpress.com/news/entry/goldfinger_new_album_the_knife|website=Alternative Press|publisher=Alternative Press Magazine, Inc.|access-date=August 8, 2017|date=May 24, 2017}}{{cite web|last1=Sayce|first1=Rob|title=Members Of Twenty One Pilots, Blink-182 & One OK Rock Are On The New Goldfinger Record|url=https://www.rocksound.tv/news/read/members-of-twenty-one-pilots-blink-182-one-ok-rock-are-on-the-new-goldfinge|website=Rock Sound|access-date=August 8, 2017|date=May 25, 2017}}{{cite magazine|last1=Kres|first1=Bryan|title=Goldfinger Start a New Day on 'Tijuana Sunrise': Exclusive|url=http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/rock/7866024/goldfinger-tijuana-sunrise-exclusive|magazine=Billboard|publisher=Eldridge Industries|access-date=August 8, 2017|date=July 14, 2017}} The album received critical acclaim.
Background
In the November/December 2010 issue No. 43 of SMASH magazine, Feldmann stated that a new EP or a possible full-length album was "in the works" with Feldmann having penned 4/5 new tracks, and Pfeiffer having recorded the drum tracks. Feldmann also states in the article that with the release of any new material would be supported with an extended tour.{{cite web|url=http://www.smashmagazine.com/issue43-cover-story.html |title=Issue 43 Cover Story - Goldfinger |publisher=SMASH Magazine |access-date=2011-07-15 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110716093403/http://www.smashmagazine.com/issue43-cover-story.html |archive-date=2011-07-16 }} According to Feldmann, Goldfinger was expecting to have their new album out sometime in 2012.{{cite web|url=http://www.punknews.org/article/45686 |title=Goldfinger to release new album this year |publisher=Punknews.org |date=2012-01-03 |access-date=2012-01-03}} The band released a new song, "Am I Deaf", on Friday May 24, 2013. Four years later, Put the Knife Away was released.{{cite web|url=https://soundcloud.com/goldfingermusic-1/am-i-deaf|title=AM I DEAF|website=Soundcloud.com|access-date=2017-07-21}}
In 2015, Feldmann did an interview with Fuse, noting that the band's future largely amounts to the occasional tour: "We'll probably release a song or two but I don't know if we're going to release albums anymore. We play the same songs we've always done."{{cite news|title=Catching Up with Goldfinger: "Superman" John Feldmann Spills All|date=June 29, 2015|author=Maria Sherman|url=http://www.fuse.tv/2015/06/goldfinger-john-feldmann-interview|publisher=Fuse|access-date=March 16, 2016}}
