Plot
In 1947, a young Aung San Suu Kyi spends time with her father Aung San, who led Burma to independence. Soon afterwards, he, along with a group of colleagues, is assassinated by armed men in uniform.{{cite web|url= http://gulfnews.com/arts-entertainment/celebrity/a-journey-of-self-realisation-1.967168|title= A journey of self-realisation|date= 20 January 2012|access-date=24 January 2012}}
In 1988, Aung San Suu Kyi, now happily married with family in England, returns to Burma to see her ill mother, finding that her father is still widely remembered. Upon visiting her mother in hospital, she meets injured patients from the Tatmadaw's crackdown in the 8888 Uprising. She realises that political change is needed in Burma and is drawn into the reform movement.{{cite news|url= https://www.theguardian.com/film/2012/jan/12/the-lady-aung-san-suu-kyi |title= This portrait of a Lady gets its perspectives wrong|access-date=16 January 2011 | location=London|work=The Guardian}} She then accepts the role of icon in support of democracy by the Burmese people and devotes herself to activities in support of greater political freedoms.{{Cite news|url= https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/reviews/the-lady-luc-besson-127-mins-6283209.html |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/archive/20220618/https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/reviews/the-lady-luc-besson-127-mins-6283209.html |archive-date=18 June 2022 |url-access=subscription |url-status=live |title= The Lady, Luc Besson, 127 mins|access-date=28 January 2011 | location=London|work=The Independent|first=Nicholas |last= Barber}}
Aung San Suu Kyi establishes the National League for Democracy and wins the 1990 elections. However, the Burmese military refuses to accept the results and moves to rein in Aung San Suu Kyi. She and her family are separated when her husband and children were banned from Burma and she is put under a house arrest for more than a decade.{{cite web|url= http://twitchfilm.com/news/2010/12/first-images-of-michelle-yeoh-in-luc-bessons-the-lady.php|title= First Images of Michelle Yeoh in Luc Besson's THE LADY|access-date= 23 May 2011|url-status= dead|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20110601095803/http://twitchfilm.com/news/2010/12/first-images-of-michelle-yeoh-in-luc-bessons-the-lady.php|archive-date= 1 June 2011|df= dmy-all}} Her husband Michael Aris keeps up a relentless struggle for Aung San Suu Kyi's recognition outside Burma. Due to their efforts, she receives the Nobel Peace Prize. As Aung San Suu Kyi cannot attend the ceremony, her family accepts the prize on her behalf. The military later offers Aung San Suu Kyi a chance to see her dying husband but she refuses, knowing that she will not be allowed to return to Burma. After grieving her husband's death, she continues her political work, appearing to supporters from behind her gate while still under house arrest.

Rebecca Frayn began working on the project after she and her husband, producer Andy Harries, had visited Burma in the early 1990s.{{cite news|author=Brown, Mark|author2=Simon Hattenstone |date=19 December 2010|url= https://www.theguardian.com/world/2010/dec/19/aung-san-suu-kyi-the-lady|title= Aung San Suu Kyi's tragic love and incredible life come to the big screen|publisher=guardian.co.uk (Guardian News & Media)|access-date=28 June 2011|location=London}} Harries' production company Left Bank Pictures began development of the script in 2008. Harries wanted Michelle Yeoh as the lead and had the script sent to her. The actress was thrilled because she had always wanted to play Suu Kyi.{{cite web|url= http://www.newstrackindia.com/newsdetails/257028|title= Michelle Yeoh always wanted to play Aung San Suu Kyi|access-date=25 May 2011}} She visited London to meet the couple.{{Cite web|url= http://www.screendaily.com/reports/one-on-one/michelle-yeoh/5035551.article|title= Michelle Yeoh|access-date=20 December 2011}} The script was as British as its origin, telling the story solely from Michael Aris' perspective but Michelle Yeoh claimed she brought an Asian insight to it. Her husband Jean Todt (who later also accompanied the project as accredited producer) encouraged her to contact his fellow countryman and friend Luc Besson.{{Cite web|url= http://www.filmbiz.asia/news/michelle-yeoh-qa |title= Michelle Yeoh Q&A|access-date=5 February 2011}}{{cite web|url= https://www.deadline.com/2011/01/luc-besson-filming-%E2%80%98the-lady%E2%80%99-in-secret/|title= Luc Besson Filming 'The Lady' In Secret|access-date= 23 May 2011|url-status= dead|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20110111081347/http://www.deadline.com/2011/01/luc-besson-filming-%E2%80%98the-lady%E2%80%99-in-secret/|archive-date= 11 January 2011|df= dmy-all}}{{Cite magazine|url= http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2037447,00.html |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20101220113050/http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2037447,00.html |url-status= dead |archive-date= 20 December 2010 |title= Q&A: Luc Besson|access-date=4 February 2011 | magazine=Time |first=Andrew |last=Marshall |date=17 December 2010}} Besson accepted the script immediately as an opportunity for him to finally present a real life heroine, a female fighter who wields no other weapons than her human virtues.{{Cite news|url= http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/11/the-lady-michelle-yeoh-luc-besson.html |title= 'The Lady': Luc Besson, Michelle Yeoh on Myanmar's Suu Kyi|access-date=19 December 2011 | work=Los Angeles Times|date=4 November 2011}}

Luc Besson stated later Michelle Yeoh "had perfected Suu Kyi's appearance and the nuances of her personality to such an extent that the lines between the real human being and the portrayed character blurred when they crossed in real life".{{Cite web|url= http://asiasociety.org/blog/asia/video-michelle-yeoh-and-luc-besson-discuss-lady-aung-san-suu-kyi |title= Michelle Yeoh and Luc Besson Discuss 'The Lady,' Aung San Suu Kyi| access-date=19 December 2011}}
To achieve authenticity Luc Besson engaged many Burmese actors and extras. Some of them, like Thein Win, re-enacted their personal memories.{{Cite magazine|url= http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2037417,00.html |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20101220124804/http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,2037417,00.html |url-status= dead |archive-date= 20 December 2010 |title= The Lady: Aung San Suu Kyi's Fight for Freedom|access-date=20 December 2011 | magazine=Time|date=27 December 2010}} Once or twice the filming of a scene had to stop because Michelle Yeoh's performance of a speech (in Burmese) elicited outbursts of emotion among extras who had originally heard Suu Kyi.{{cite news|url= http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/michelle-yeoh-calls-aung-san-260600|title= Michelle Yeoh Calls Aung San Suu Kyi an 'Iconic Female Asian Figure'|access-date=1 May 2012 | work=The Hollywood Reporter|first=Steven|last=Schwankert|date=11 November 2011}}
Co-producer Andy Harries concentrated on substantiating the British part of his wife's script. He achieved authenticity of the happy time in Suu Kyi's life, when she lived with her family in the United Kingdom. Their flat was also recreated on a sound stage, although the film includes scenes shot on location in front of the house itself.{{Cite news|url= https://www.variety.com/article/VR1118047940?refcatid=13 |title= Realistic, exotic look for 'Lady'|access-date=1 May 2012 | work=Variety| first=Andrew| last=Clarke| date=5 January 2012}} The scenes showing Michael Aris as a dying cancer patient were also shot on location in the actual hospital.{{Cite news|url= https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/portrait-of-a-lady-20120407-1whjq.html |title=Portrait of a lady|access-date=23 April 2012 | work=Los Angeles Times|first=Ed|last=Gibbs}}

Reception
The film received mixed reviews, generally negative in the west, but stronger in the east. English critics often appreciated the efforts of the leading actress, Michelle Yeoh, and the performance of English actor David Thewlis while criticising director/producer Luc Besson. American critics joined the criticism of Luc Besson. In Asia, the reception was more positive.
- Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports an approval rating of 36% based on 72 reviews, with an average score of 5.16/10. The critical consensus reads, "Even as The Lady focuses on Aung San Suu Kyi's romantic life parallel to her political ascendancy, Luc Besson's saccharine direction is too concerned with deifying the Nobel Prize-winner for her humanity to actually shine through."{{cite web |url=https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_lady_2011/ |title=The Lady |access-date=20 May 2020 |publisher=Rotten Tomatoes}}
