Critical reception

Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic picked the song as one of the "high points" of the album.{{cite web|first= Stephen Thomas |last= Erlewine |title= Luther Vandross – Power of Love |publisher= AllMusic |accessdate= November 4, 2020 |url= https://www.allmusic.com/album/power-of-love-mw0000263046 |author-link= Stephen Thomas Erlewine}} Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Vandross is sinfully sweet, slick, and sexy—as always. Urgent, moody R&B tune features upbeat drums that keep the pace rocking, while the melody evokes mystery and passion."{{cite magazine|first= Larry |last= Flick |title= Single Reviews |magazine= Billboard |date= November 16, 1991 |page= 81 |accessdate= October 22, 2020 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-Billboard/90s/1991/BB-1991-11-16.pdf |author-link= Larry Flick}} A reviewer from Cashbox picked it as one of the "strongest" songs on the album, describing it as "smooth yet funky".{{cite magazine|title= Pop Reviews: Albums |magazine= Cashbox |date= May 18, 1991 |page= 5 |accessdate= October 31, 2020 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/90s/1991/CB-1991-05-18.pdf}} The magazine later stated, "It’s Luther, it’s a hit! To this date, Luther Vandross has been turning out nothing but hits, and this one is no exception." They added, "You have to give him some credit for changing his musical style on “The Rush”, because this single has a completely different sound compared to his previous productions (and it sounds good). It's needless to write about his vocals because everyone knows about this man's lyrical talent. Just mark down another hit.."{{cite magazine|title= News & Reviews: Singles |magazine= Cashbox |date= December 7, 1991 |page= 5 |accessdate= October 31, 2020 |url= https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/90s/1991/CB-1991-12-07.pdf}} Ken Tucker from Entertainment Weekly noted that songs like this "describe the sort of openness, understatement, and spontaneity that have virtually disappeared as pop-music values since the death of Marvin Gaye and Al Green's decision to save his soul for gospel."{{cite magazine|first= Ken |last= Tucker |title= Power of Love |magazine= Entertainment Weekly |date= May 31, 1991 |accessdate= November 11, 2020 |url= https://ew.com/article/1991/05/31/power-love/}}
