Professional career
In 2003, Wilkinson turned pro. He joined the second tier Nationwide Tour in 2005, but failed to win enough money to graduate directly to the PGA Tour. He finally obtained his PGA Tour card by finishing inside the top 25 at the 2007 qualifying school.{{cite news |url=http://www.nzherald.co.nz/manawatu/news/article.cfm?l_id=500559&objectid=10480170 |title=Golf: Wilkinson earns PGA Tour card |work=The New Zealand Herald |date=4 December 2007 |accessdate=2009-04-09}}
Wilkinson had a successful rookie season on the PGA Tour in 2008, the highlights being an outright third at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and finishing joint runner-up at the Valero Texas Open, two shots behind winner Zach Johnson. He made over one million dollars in prize money and finished 92nd on the final money list.{{cite web |url=http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/golf/712662 |title=Tim Wilkinson happy with opening year |publisher=Stuff |date=11 November 2008 |accessdate=2009-04-09}}{{cite news |url=http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10545740 |title=Golf: Doing it his own way |work=The New Zealand Herald |date=30 November 2008 |accessdate=2009-04-09 |first=Ahmer |last=Khokhar}}
In 2009, Wilkinson played in the final pairing at the Verizon Heritage, but faded to finish T6.{{cite web |url=http://www.pgatour.com/2009/tournaments/r012/04/18/awtrey.rd3/index.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090422142259/http://www.pgatour.com/2009/tournaments/r012/04/18/awtrey.rd3/index.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=22 April 2009 |title=Wilkinson Looking to ride the wind to a historic victory |publisher=PGA Tour |date=14 April 2009 |accessdate=2011-10-24 }} A thumb ligament injury curtailed his season and saw him gain a major medical extension of his playing rights. By June 2010 he had played the 12 events this extension afforded him, and had not earned enough money to retain his status.{{cite web |url=http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/golf/5571431 |title=Wilkinson finds form with top eight finish |publisher=Stuff |date=6 September 2011 |accessdate=2011-10-24}}
