History

The village was established in 1955 by Jewish immigrants and refugees from North Africa on land that had belonged to the depopulated Palestinian village of 'Ajjur.{{cite book|title=All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=_By7AAAAIAAJ |first1=Walid|last1=Khalidi|authorlink=Walid Khalidi|year=1992|location=Washington D.C.|publisher=Institute for Palestine Studies|isbn=0-88728-224-5|page=207}}

Its name is derived from the fact that there are many vineyards in the area.

Just outside the village is the reported location of a storage facility for nuclear weapons.{{cite web|url=http://virtualglobetrotting.com/ll/31.7496,34.8865/?d=25 |title=Nearby Maps: 31.7496 34.8865: Page 1 |publisher=Virtual Globetrotting |date= |accessdate=2016-01-13}}
