Tolbert is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is part of the municipality of Westerkwartier and forms a single urban area with Leek.

History

Tolbert is located in the {{ill|Vredewold|nl|Vredewold (streek)}} region. The area was settled during the 10th and 11th century.{{cite web|url=https://plaatsengids.nl/tolbert |title=Tolbert |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=7 March 2022 |language=nl}} It was first mentioned in 1479 as Oldebert. The name is a contraction of het (the definite article) ol(de) (old) and bert (village), and literally means "the old village".{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/tolbert |title=Tolbert |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=7 March 2022 |language=nl}} The church is from the 17th century, but contains 13th century parts.{{cite book|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu04_01/sten009monu04_01_0056.php |title=Leek |author=Redmer Alma |page=153 |year=1998 |publisher=Waanders Uitgevers |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9258 3 |language=nl |access-date=7 March 2022}} The parish dates from the 14th century. In 1794, Tolbert bought a seat in the States of Groningen from Aduard,{{cite book|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/boeken/view?identifier=MMKB02:000126215:00028&query=Tolbert&coll=boeken&page=3&rowid=3 |title=Geschiedkundige atlas van Nederland part II |year=1923 |author=P.J. In 1795, it was home to 476 people.{{cite book|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/boeken/view?identifier=dpo:6244:mpeg21:0036&query=Tolbert&coll=boeken&page=4&rowid=1 |title=Verdeling van de provincie van Stad en Lande |page=36 |year=1796 |publisher=Jan Oomkens |location=Groningen |language=nl |access-date=7 March 2022}} By 1817, it was part of the municipality of Leek.{{cite news|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/view?query=tolbert+leek&facets%5Bperiode%5D%5B%5D=1%7C19e_eeuw%7C1810-1819%7C&page=2&coll=ddd&identifier=MMKB23:001558001:mpeg21:a00001&resultsidentifier=MMKB23:001558001:mpeg21:a00001&rowid=6 |title=Benoemingen |website=Groninger courant |date=3 January 1817 |language=nl |access-date=7 March 2022 |quote=Probably reorganised during the occupation by Napoleon}}

Tolbert was mainly an agricultural community, however the industrialisation of nearby Leek attracted people to the village. In 1907, there was a malaria outbreak in Tolbert.{{cite thesis|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/boeken/view?identifier=MMSFUBA02:000014667:00015&query=Tolbert&coll=boeken&rowid=4 |title=Malaria in Noord-Nederland |page=4 |author=Heinrich Joseph Maria Schade |year=1909 |publisher=De Waal |location=Groningen |language=nl |access-date=7 March 2022}} After World War II, Tolbert and Leek became a single urban area, however it remained a separate entity. In 2019, it became part of the municipality of Westerkwartier.

Sports

{{anchor|circuit}}

In 1950, a street circuit for motorcycle racing was set-up in the village. In 1956, it was considered too dangerous and was no longer permitted. In 1970, permission was granted outside the build-up area. In 1984, Jack Middelburg was killed during a race.{{cite news|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/view?query=tolbert+Jack+Middelburg&coll=ddd&identifier=ABCDDD:010819642:mpeg21:a0261&resultsidentifier=ABCDDD:010819642:mpeg21:a0261&rowid=4 |title=Middelburg bezwijkt aan verwondingen |date=4 April 1984 |access-date=7 March 2022 |language=nl}} In 2008, the races ended, because the organisation could not finance the required safety investments.{{cite news|url=https://www.dekrantvantoen.nl/vw/article.do?id=DVHN-20080415-DO01015007&vw=org |title=Nooit meer CC races op circuit Tolbert |author=Jaap van Brummelen |date=15 April 2008 |website=Dagblad van het Noorden |access-date=7 March 2022 |language=nl}}
