The Truss ministry began on 6 September 2022 when Liz Truss was invited by Queen Elizabeth II—two days before the monarch's death—to succeed Boris Johnson as prime minister of the United Kingdom. Johnson had resigned as leader of the Conservative Party the previous day after Truss was elected as his successor.{{Cite news |date=5 September 2022 |title=Chris Mason: No honeymoon period for next PM Liz Truss |work=BBC News |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-62794187 |access-date=5 September 2022 |archive-date=20 October 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221020125825/https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-62794187 |url-status=live }} The Truss ministry was formed from the 2019 Parliament of the United Kingdom, as a Conservative majority government.{{Cite news |date=5 September 2022 |title=Liz Truss to appoint cabinet of loyalists as she becomes UK's next PM |url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/05/liz-truss-to-appoint-cabinet-of-loyalists-as-she-becomes-uks-next-pm |access-date=5 September 2022 |work=The Guardian |archive-date=6 September 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220906073718/https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/sep/05/liz-truss-to-appoint-cabinet-of-loyalists-as-she-becomes-uks-next-pm |url-status=live }}
On 20 October 2022, amid growing disapproval of her leadership from within the Conservative Party, Truss announced her resignation, making her tenure the shortest in the history of the United Kingdom. She resigned as Conservative Party leader on 24 October and as prime minister on 25 October. The cabinet was dissolved following the appointment of Rishi Sunak as prime minister on 25 October.{{Cite web |date=20 October 2022 |title=Liz Truss resigns as prime minister after Tory revolt |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-63332037 |access-date=20 October 2022 |website=BBC News |language=en |archive-date=20 October 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221020124108/https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63332037 |url-status=live }}{{Cite news |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/live/uk-politics-63309400 |title=Liz Truss meeting Tory backbench chair as more MPS call for her to quit – BBC News |work=BBC News |date=19 October 2022 |access-date=20 October 2022 |archive-date=20 October 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221020111535/https://www.bbc.com/news/live/uk-politics-63309400 |url-status=live }}
