Ultimate Collection is a compilation album by the American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann. Released on September 12, 2000, by Hip-O, the album mostly comprises tracks from her first two solo albums and her work with the band 'Til Tuesday. Mann did not approve the release and sued the record company, Universal Music, for breach of contract.
Lawsuit
Mann did not approve the release of Ultimate Collection. In a statement on her website, she said that the record company, Universal Music, had refused her offer to choose tracks and provide artwork.{{Cite magazine |date=2001-09-17 |title=Aimee Mann Sues Universal |url=https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/aimee-mann-sues-universal-78398/ |access-date=2023-07-19 |magazine=Billboard |language=en-US}} Instead, the compilation includes songs Mann considered substandard, such as a rough mix, a song recorded from a live radio performance she did not authorize, and a cover song she recorded as a favor for a film producer friend.
In 2001, Mann sued Universal Music, saying the release breached an stipulation in her contract that Universal could not release a compilation without her consent. Mann sought more than $2 million in damages.{{Cite news |date=2001-09-18 |title=Aimee Mann sues over hits |language=en-GB |work=BBC News |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/1550218.stm |access-date=2021-11-08}}
