The Union for the Republic ({{langx|ar|الاتحاد من أجل الجمهورية}}; {{langx|fr|Union pour la République}}, UPR) was a political party in Mauritania. The party was formed on 5 May 2009 by Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz after he resigned from the military, to run for President of Mauritania. Aziz resigned as chairman of the party on 2 August 2009 after winning the presidential election, as the President of Mauritania cannot be a member of any party.{{cite web|title=Mauritania's president-elect resigns as party leader|url=http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90777/90855/6717067.html|website=People's Daily Online}} The party also won 13 of the 17 seats up for re-election to the Mauritanian Senate in 2009, giving the UPR control of a total of 38 of the 53 Senate seats.{{cite web|url=http://www.ipu.org/parline/reports/2208_E.htm |title=MAURITANIA (Majlis Al-Chouyoukh) |access-date=February 16, 2013 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150209223413/http://www.ipu.org/parline/reports/2208_E.htm |archive-date=February 9, 2015 }}{{cite web|title=Mauritania|url=https://2009-2017.state.gov/documents/organization/186431.pdf|publisher=U.S. Department of State}}
