History

The original station on the site opened when the railway from Coburg was extended to Somerton in 1889.{{cite web |url=http://www.vicsig.net/infrastructure/location/Upfield |title=Upfield |website=vicsig.net |access-date=5 February 2023}} The current station was opened on 17 August 1959, especially to serve workers at the nearby Ford factory, with the line from Fawkner to Somerton being reopened and electrified as far as Upfield. The name of the station comes from the open country in the area at the time of its 1959 opening.{{cite web |url=https://www.victorianplaces.com.au/upfield |title=Upfield|publisher=Victorian Places |accessdate=26 December 2022}}{{cite news |first=Jamie |last=First |url=https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/victoria/the-az-story-of-melbournes-suburbs/news-story/6f7611b7df20e55ad02f5e9615885e21 |title=The A-Z story of Melbourne's suburbs |work=Herald Sun |date=7 January 2014 |accessdate=5 February 2023}}

During 1963–1964, the present station building was constructed.{{cite magazine| date=November 1963 |title=New Works, Closures, Tenders, Etc. |magazine=Divisional Diary|publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society (Victorian Division) |page=10}} In 1965, flashing light signals were provided at the Barry Road level crossing, located at the up end of the station.

There is a train stabling yard north of the station, which opened in 1997.{{cite web|url=http://www.vrhistory.com/Locations/T1997.PDF|title=VR History by Andrew Waugh – Upfield Line|publisher=VR History|author=Andrew Waugh|access-date=13 February 2015}} Also in that year, a signal panel was installed. In 1998, boom barriers were provided at the Barry Road level crossing, as part of upgrade works along the Upfield line.{{cite magazine|date=May 2000|title=Upfield|author=Andrew Waugh|magazine=Somersault|publisher=Signalling Record Society (Victoria)|pages=47–52}}

During 2002–2003, the station was refurbished{{cite magazine |date=January 2003 |title=Works |magazine=Newsrail |publisher=Australian Railway Historical Society (Victorian Division) |page=28}} and, in December 2007, Upfield was upgraded to a premium station.{{cite web|url=http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/Doi/Internet/transport.nsf/AllDocs/036633AC857229CCCA256EF5000286DE?OpenDocument |archive-url=http://webarchive.loc.gov/all/20090628203445/http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/DOI/Internet/transport.nsf/AllDocs/036633AC857229CCCA256EF5000286DE?OpenDocument |url-status=dead |archive-date=28 June 2009 |title=Premium Stations |publisher=Department of Infrastructure |access-date=24 June 2013 }} In 2011, an extra stabling siding (Siding "A") was provided.

Under the PTV Network Development Plan, released in 2013, the section of the line between Upfield and Roxburgh Park was to be reinstated, and would include a flyover across the North East standard gauge line. That would allow V/Line services to Seymour to operate via Upfield, and would facilitate the eventual electrification of the line to Wallan.[https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/ptvic/NDPMR+-+Network+Development+Plan+-+Metropolitan+Rail+-+FINAL+for+web+-+up.pdf Network Development Plan – Metropolitan Rail] Public Transport Victoria

On 30 June 2019, the Upfield signal panel was abolished, and control was transferred to Metrol.{{cite web |url=https://vicsig.net/index.php?page=infrastructure&box=Upfield |title=Upfield Signal Box (UFD) |website=vicsig.net |access-date=1 April 2023}}
