Match summary:
The first quarter was dominated by Fremantle, with Fremantle's ruckman Aaron Sandilands scoring the first goal of the match.{{cite news|first=Michael|last=Howard|title=Geelong has held off Fremantle at Subiaco Oval|url=http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,25667188-19766,00.html|publisher=Herald Sun|date=21 June 2009|accessdate=24 June 2009}} Fremantle led for the rest of the quarter, with Geelong being kept goalless until just before quarter-time when Fremantle's Antoni Grover was reported for rough conduct on Geelong's Steve Johnson, who was awarded a free kick in the goal square, and subsequently kicked Geelong's first goal of the match. The goal reduced Fremantle's lead to just seven points at quarter-time.
Geelong opened strongly in the second-term, with two quick goals from Corey Enright and Tom Hawkins to take the early lead. Fremantle's Michael Walters then kicked a goal to level the scores (23 points each) midway through the quarter. Geelong kicked three more goals for the quarter (two goals from Shannon Byrnes, and another from Hawkins), compared to Fremantle's one (scored by Steven Dodd), to lead at half-time by 13 points.
Both teams gained some early momentum in the third-quarter with a goal apiece from Fremantle's Matthew De Boer and Geelong's Byrnes in the quarter's opening minute. Geelong then scored the following goal when Travis Varcoe intercepted the ball in Fremantle's forward-line, and managed to move the ball across the ground and gain a clearance into Geelong's forward-line, and ultimately resulting in a Ryan Gamble goal, which extended the margin to 24 points in favour of Geelong. Fremantle then produced four goals, including two in the final minute of the quarter from rookie Nick Suban and youngster Stephen Hill, to level the scores at three-quarter time, with both sides on 61 points.
Only one point (by Geelong's Joel Selwood) was scored in the first four minutes of the final quarter, before Geelong's Steve Johnson kicked two consecutive goals in under a minute to extend Geelong's lead to 13 points. Fremantle's Ibbotson then scored the next goal, but Geelong replied quickly when Byrnes kicked his fourth major for the match. Fremantle then replied with a goal of their own when Matthew Pavlich was awarded a free kick, but they managed no more goals for the match, with Geelong managing two more with Byrnes kicking a career-best fifth goal, and Paul Chapman kicking a late goal to ensure the match was a victory for Geelong. The final score was Geelong (13.16 94) to Fremantle (11.9 75), with Geelong winning by a margin of 19 points. The victory also earned Geelong the record of the most consecutive interstate match wins by an AFL club, with 12 consecutive wins.{{cite news|first=Tim|last=Clarke|title=Cats break record and Freo hearts|url=http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/rfmatchreport/cats-break-record-and-freo-hearts/2009/06/21/1245522734342.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap2|publisher=The Age|date=22 June 2009|accessdate=24 June 2009}}{{cite news|first=Nathan|last=Schmook|title=Cats beat Freo for road record|url=http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/79106/default.aspx|publisher=AFL BigPond Network|date=21 June 2009|accessdate=24 June 2009}}
