Namespace-Category analysis

  • :Category:Articles has been repurposed (to cover admin related to articles, but couldn't that include all wp admin?) - either reverse that (after discussion) or make corresponding changes to NSCat.
  • Keep using category intersection to spot anomalies and fix them - e.g. [https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?language=en&project=wikipedia&depth=5&categories=Technology&ns%5B1%5D=1&ns%5B3%5D=1&ns%5B4%5D=1&ns%5B5%5D=1&ns%5B8%5D=1&ns%5B9%5D=1&ns%5B11%5D=1&ns%5B15%5D=1&ns%5B101%5D=1&ns%5B109%5D=1&ns%5B119%5D=1&ns%5B446%5D=1&ns%5B710%5D=1&ns%5B711%5D=1&ns%5B829%5D=1&ns%5B2301%5D=1&ns%5B2303%5D=1&output_compatability=quick-intersection&interface_language=en&].
  • Fully resolve (RFC?) (not) categorizing templates as articles.
  • Investigate whether an edit filter or a bot (like DPL Bot) could be used to detect/prevent/fix edits (e.g. to talk pages) that add a category tag.
  • To be fixed:

=[[:Category:Military equipment by war]]=

Mosin–Nagant is a good example of how many wars a weapon can be used in.

One problem with these categories is that an editor might see that an article is in (for example) :Category:World War II artillery of the United Kingdom and assume (not unreasonably) that the category is for weapons used by the UK in WWII - they then go and place the article in categories for other countries.

;Examples of CFDs:

Falklands War weapons, Military equipment of the Iraq War‎, Military equipment of the Korean War‎, Military equipment of the Kosovo War‎, Military equipment of the Spanish Civil War‎, Military equipment of the Second Sino-Japanese War‎, Military equipment of the Vietnam War‎, Military equipment of the Gulf War‎

==[[:Category:Military aircraft by war‎]]==

In WP we don't generally categorize mass-produced items by either who uses them (countries, armed forces etc) or when/where they were used (e.g. in a particular conflict). This is because some some types (e.g. CH-47) could be in dozens (possibly hundreds) of such categories (Mosin–Nagant is a non-aviation example). In other words we don't usually consider usage to be a defining characteristic. For example "Category:Military aircraft of the Korean War" was deleted.

However there are many military aircraft of the World War I/II era for which it would not be totally unreasonable to begin an article with something like "The Avro Lancaster was the RAF's main heavy bomber during World War II. It was also used ..." - i.e. it's not so easy to show that usage isn't a defining characteristic.

Thus we currently have hundreds of aircraft types categorized in :Category:Military aircraft by war - a category structure that is not mentioned at WP:AIR/C. That category comes up in discussions from time-to-time (e.g. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft in late June 2013).

We could accept these categories (i.e. modify WP:AIR/C to cover them), take them to CFD now (but I think that's likely to face opposition), or work to replace them by lists/categories (i.e. take them to CFD when it can be shown that they are not needed).

Note: This only affects articles about aircraft types; it may be reasonable to categorize an article about an individual aircraft by events that it's notable for.

Similar issues may arise in other parts of the :Category:Military equipment by war tree, but that's outside the scope of this discussion.

It may well be that the :Category:Military aircraft by war categories were created in the early days of WP when only the most prominent aircraft had articles.

Templates and lists can be more flexible than categories.

(after purging)

Rationale: The distinction between acronyms/initialisms/abbreviations these isn't clear (e.g. see ????). This merge may reduce the rate at which pages (e.g. dab pages) are placed in the category inappropriately.

=Remove the word "present" from category name=

:* Rename :Category:War in Afghanistan (2015–present) to ??? - CFD (no consensus)

=Important Bird Areas=

:Category:Important Bird Areas

CFD (it and?) all its subcats - start by testing with Antarctica article ?

There are some list articles that may need to be upmerged

The somewhat similar (albeit much smaller) Important Plant Areas category was deleted by this CFD.

=Motorsport HoF=

:Category:West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame inductees

For information: There is a much more comprehensive list in the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame article.

Previous CFDs for motorsport HoFs include this.

Example re WP:COP#N:

Clint Eastwood "He worked at a number of jobs, including lifeguard, paper carrier, grocery clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy." (Sep 2013)

=Categories that are dubious re "defining"=

Some examples of categories that (at least last time I looked at them) appeared to contain mainly articles that are inappropriate for that category (i.e. it's not a defining characteristic of the subject):

:Category:Television series revived after cancellation

:Category:Board game gameplay and terminology
