Grace Pickus was (is?) a life-long resident of the Antelope Valley/Lancaster, and was a member of the Kern Antelope Historical Society. H. Clifford "Cliff" Burton emigrated to the AV in 1900 from England with his parents. Burton became a major stockholder of Tropico Mines in Rosamond, CA. After serving in WW2 he returned to the AV and with brother Cecil became sole owners of Tropico. Became one of CA's most successful gold miners. Had a daughter, Doreen. Tropico Mines provides settings for Peter Gunn, The Invaders, Lassie, Travellers Insurance commercials, The Party, Doc Elliot. Bonanza, Hich Chapparal, Rat Patrol, Gunsmoke, Nickols, Cannon, The 6 Million Dollar Man, Apple Dumpling Gang, Blazing Saddles, Deacon, The High Noon Dog all filmed there, too. In 1930s the price of gold increases and Tropico becomes a major Californian mine, milling many tons of ore. Tropico expands operations, replaces old milling equipment with new ball mills and a cyanide recovery process. Begin custom milling on large scale for local small mines and begins supplying most other local mines with equipment and tools. Begin receiving unrefined ore from as far away as AZ and NV. By 1939, over 400 mines ship ore to Burtons and was Southern CA's largest custom recovery operations. Burtons later expand to Ruth Mine in Trona, which also had a mill, and Fortuna Mine in Yuma, AZ.

Cecil Burton dies 1947, Clifford dies 1949. Doreen Burton marries Glen Settle in 1948.

Glen Settle born 1911 in the AV (Palmdale). Worked at AV Produce, became partner in business in 1933. Appeared in small parts in films, including One Run Elmer, Late 30s AV Produce becomes AV Distributing Company, trucking beverages, frozen food. Opened valley's first soda bottling plant with financial backing from Tropico. In 1942 begin producing Antelope Beverages brand of sodas, and obtains franchises for Squirt and other sodas.

H Clifford's son Clifford G, daughter Doreen and son-in-law Glen (after selling AV Distribution) operate the mine but with rising inflation, cost of mining and milling gold was reaching the $35 per ounce price for gold set by government regulation. Many smaller mines begin to close. Tropico install a floatation recovery process to mill the more complex mines. Mine closes 1956 after operating continuously since 1894. Cliff G move to Bishop and works at Tungsten Mine.

Prior to closure, Tropico receives number of enquiries from LA Chamber of Commerce and other orgs to operate tours of Tropico so people, esp. school children can see and experience a real "hard rock" CA operational mine. Being too busy, the offers are always rejected until after closure. Tropico Gold Camp Museum opens January 1958. Old mine warehouse converted into a museum, with a coulpe of watchmen houses. Writers, artists, geologists, newspapers, historians, schools, librarians, prospectors all visit Tropico in the first year. Camp moves in number of animals. Quail, condors, chipmunks, lizards, toads, snakes, wildcats, bobcats, owls, bats, CA Fish & Game imports chukar partridge from India. Museum holds artifacts from mines in Oregon, NV, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, CA Mother lode, Alaska, Yukon, from mines, antique stores and ghost towns. Antelope Valley's oldest structures are moved to Tropico for preservation, old railroad buildings, old Palmdale schoolhouse, some old houses, Rosamond's first Post Office, store and hotel. Tropico Gold Camp establishes Kern-Antelope Historical Society for preservation of such, and other Antelope Valley, southern Kern County records, artifacts, etc.

Glen Settle is museum director, curator, also becomes inaugural Director of the Kern-Antelope Historical Society. In 1967 is appointed to California State Historical Landmarks Committee by Governor Ronald Reagan, served for 10 years and was Chairman for two years from 1971. Was technical advisor and set locator on tv shows and films, and worked on Slim Barnard's Happy Wanderer TV Travel series. Named Landmark Chairman for the Conference of California Historical Societies.

1960 Tropico holds first World Championship Gold Panning Contest. Becomes annual event. 1966 Camp hosts Tropico Time Tunnel (see page 1 New York Times, Jan 29, 1967). Camp operates until 1990s, then closes. Some buildings, such as first Palmdale schoolhouse moved back to Palmdale, now in a City Park. Other buildings still at Tropico. Donates all artefacts and papers to local man named Strasburg on promise of donating to a local library upon his death. Strasburg dies, leaving all to Palmdale City Library, which establishes the Strasburg Collection. Doreen Settle dies early 2000s, Glen Settle dies late 2000s or 2010. KAVS gradually winds down as members (mostly old people) die.
