Regarding your message about my Draft: Gallery of Atomic Orbitals Page

Hello Bduke, I'd like to thank you for your considerate message about the rejection of my draft. You are right that I am disappointed that it has been rejected. Unfortunately I'm starting to feel that my efforts might be wasted on Wikipedia. I think I am primarily interested in giving clear explanations on seemingly introductory topics that would be helpful for, say, college level students, but which are missing from most introductory textbooks. Unfortunately the "missing from most introductory textbooks" puts the type of content I would like to include in the category of not citable/not in the literature, so it feels like it comes off with a little bit too much of an "original research flavor". It seems I may need to find a different outlet for this type of content.

That said, if you're willing to share, I'm curious to hear your opinion about any of (1) the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Gallery_of_Atomic_Orbitals page, (2) recent edits I've made to Table of spherical harmonics or (3) atomic orbital.

Also, you suggested I take the content form my draft page and merge it into the atomic orbital page. I'd considered that previously and I'm reconsidering it now. Unfortunately the figures, which were the main content of my draft page, do have overlap with existing content on that page. I think the figures themselves come as a complete set, it doesn't make sense to me to include only a subset of them because the merit, that I saw, in them, was that they were an exhaustive gallery of atomic orbitals up to n=6, as opposed to a representative subset. Also, I think it interesting to show orbitals beyond f because I guess that many students are interested in them (I was), but it is sometimes hard to find pictures of them. Especially side-by-side real/complex. But again, here I am in the "original research" territory...

I also have higher level issues with the atomic orbitals page because it seems like it caught up in a triangle with hydrogen-like atom and hydrogen atom where this is already a ton of duplication of content, so I'm not sure where to start to refine the overall narrative about atomic orbitals on Wikipedia. I'm searching for a venue to open that conversation..

Anyways, I would be delighted if you are willing to respond to any of what I said, but if not, I just want to thank you again for your consideration. I am interested in becoming a more experience Wikipedia editor but it has felt like I've had a fair amount of impersonal rejection which has made it feel lonely.Twistar48 (talk) 02:42, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

:I think the essential point is that Wikipedia is an encycopedia. It is not a teaching aid, even though it is useful for many students. --Bduke (talk) 05:51, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on the talk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made, Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly name Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like [https://bambots.brucemyers.com/cwb/bycat/Skepticism.html] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

The Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

Thank you for your time, I hope to edit with you in the future.Sgerbic (talk) 06:52, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

:Happy to do that. --Bduke (talk) 00:40, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

; Aims

After discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Yorkshire in April 2008.

Specific aims for the project are:-

  • To complete tagging and assessment of all Yorkshire related articles (See below)
  • To recruit more active editors (See Member News)
  • To bring our top level article Yorkshire up to Featured article status
  • To bring all other top priority articles (currently 15 with 2 at FA) to at least Good article status
  • To set up a weekly or monthly selected article improvement drive (See this month's feature below)
  • To produce a regular news letter for circulation to members

and apropos of the above a 2010 New Year article improvement drive/collaboration is being organised.

;Priority Articles

The top priority articles that have been identified to date are as follows -

The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

  • Monitoring is essential
Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
  • Moves
Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.

The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

;Wiki Loves Monuments

September is the time for the annual Wiki Loves Monuments competition to get quality photographs of listed buildings and scheduled monuments in the UK. It would be good if any members in the Yorkshire area got out and about taking images of any monuments or listed buildings that they find. There are still several entries on the various list articles without images and it would be best to prioritise these if you are in the right place. Details for this years competition can be [https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org.uk/?pk_campaign=Centralnotice found here]. There are cash prises of up to £250 for the best images that are submitted.

If you are not in Yorkshire then you are still able to join in as the competition covers the whole of the UK, separate competitions are available for other areas of the world if you are not UK based.

You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.

End of Wikipedia

Greetings. I saw [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/ScottishFinnishRadish&diff=prev&oldid=1110409494 your comment] where you were speculating about the end of Wikipedia. Years ago I started a thread about planning for a post admin era. Since then, the situation has continued to degrade. At the time, we had [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:List_of_administrators&diff=754992210&oldid=754812494 526 active administrators]. We now have [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:List_of_administrators&diff=1110282833&oldid=1110105590 482 active administrators]. Ok no that's not a dramatic drop off, but it's a continual slide down. Wikipedia will eventually run out of admins. In fact, I could argue it already has. But, it won't come as a big crash and sudden awareness by the whole project that we're short admins. It will happen very gradually, with out much notice of it happening. This has already happened at Commons. Commons is woefully short of admins. Deletion requests there wait months. Right now, the backlog is 5 months long. Things will get like that here. It will take time, but it will get that bad. I've tried to get discussion going on the issue since 2016, but it never gains traction. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:36, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz begins on 16 October at 00:01 (UTC) and will end on 22 October at 23:59 (UTC). Barnstars awarded will be posted here.

Progress report: As of 19:57, 12 October 2022 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 303 requests for copy edit – including withdrawn and declined ones – since 1 January. At the time of writing, there are 77 requests awaiting attention and the backlog of tagged articles stands at 1,759. We always need more active, skilled copyeditors – particularly for requests – so please get involved if you can.

Election news: In our mid-year election, serving coordinators Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tenryuu were returned for another term, and were joined by new coordinator Zippybonzo. Thank you to everyone who took part. Our next election of coordinators takes place throughout December. If you'd like to help out at the GOCE, please consider nominating yourself or other suitable editors (with their permission, of course!). It's your Guild, after all!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators {{noping|Baffle gab1978}}, {{noping|Dhtwiki}}, {{noping|Miniapolis}}, {{noping|Reidgreg}}, {{noping|Tenryuu}} and {{noping|Zippybonzo}}.
