Following Wikipedia style

Please review Wikipedia style guidelines before making style changes to articles. In the article on Ricky Nelson, I have reverted your punctuation changes that do not follow WP:MOS#Quotations marks, as well as your inappropriate removal of date links as required by MOS:DATE. The first is a long-standing compromise between American and British English styles, in which we use British "logical quotation" (quote marks only around actual material quoted, not just for form's sake) and American "double" quotation marks. This is official house style, and has survived years of largely repetitive debates. The date links are not for the sake of hyperlinking, but rather to allow the Mediawiki processor to reformat dates into the style specified by each user in their preferences, also to accomodate our global audience. I also restored links for "the South" (an expression not necessarily known outside the U.S.) and "De Kalb, Texas" (an appropriate link for a town with an article). Please remember that English Wikipedia is created and maintained by and for English speakers around the world, not just people in the United States.

Much more information on style guidelines may be found at Wikipedia:Manual of Style and its supporting pages. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to answer them. (And I repeat and emphasize Chicken Wing's request above. Edit summaries are vital aids for maintaining articles. Please read the linked help page to understand why they are strongly encouraged at all times.) Thank you for your cooperation. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 03:55, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Film lists

Hi. Thanks for filling in the American film lists. Your developments make them many times better. Two things. The lists were actually initially created using the general year categories in the assumption that the vast majority are American movies. While this is true the foreign movies, those which are not American or are not American co productions with another country should be removed and inserted into the relevant foreign list e.g Japanese films of 1987 etc. If you could remove all foreign movies from the American lists and insert them into the relevant foreign list tables as you work through them this would be great. However if it is an American co production it can stay. You'll find that the lists that need the most work are generally odd years rather than even like 1955 etc but soon enough we want a fully complete useful list by year of which your edits help enormously. Also if you know of any missing films by year, as far as I am aware very few of the lists have actually been compiled using imdb so there may be many more feature films missing by year. DOn't be afraid to red link any missing films to add in the lists. The idea is to create the most comprehensive list of films by year for each country. But if you want to concentrate on building up the current lists and then adding films at a later date this is cool by me. Keep up the great work and welcome Cliff!!! Unreferenced BLPs

30px Hello Cliff1911! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current {{PAGESINCATEGORY:All_unreferenced_BLPs}} article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{tl|unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Edit summaries

You have been asked several times to use edit summaries when making contributions. Looking through your edit history it appears that you have never used one. Consider this a final warning that if you don't start using edit summaries, you may be blocked from editing. Also, please use sources when adding material to articles. You cannot simply add content without supplying where you got it from. See WP:REF to learn more. If you have any questions, please ask. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 18:24, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, plus a question

Thanks for the [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yvonne_De_Carlo&curid=695909&diff=509123148&oldid=508822567 fix] to Yvonne De Carlo re the correct name for McLintock!.

Also, are you understanding about the links to disambig pages? For instance, one would (basically) never put a link to (let's say) Sebastian Cabot in an article, since there are two Sebastian Cabots and so that link just takes the reader to a page that looks like this:

:{{xt|Sebastian Cabot may refer to:}}

::{{xt|Sebastian Cabot (explorer) (1476–1557), Italian explorer}}

::{{xt|Sebastian Cabot (actor) (1918–1977), British actor}}

which is seldom useful. Instead, you would want to write Sebastian Cabot. The first part (before the pipe character (the "|")) describes where the link goes; the second part (after the pipe character) describes what the user sees. (I use "where it goes - what it shows" as a mnemonic to remember which is which.) This way, the user still sees "Sebastian Cabot" but the link takes him directly to our page for Charles Sebastian Thomas Cabot, the actor.

If the name is extremely unusual (Mortomero Quisenberry, say) then probably there isn't a disambig page and you can just write "Mortomero Quisenberry". If the name is very usual (Ed Smith, say) then there most certainly will be a disambig page and you'll need to use write "Ed Smith" or whatever. If it's in-between you'll have to check. Generally you should check by following the link yourself.

Any questions about this, feel free to message me. Cheers and happy editing, Herostratus (talk) 05:13, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Now look here

26pxYou need to stop adding links to disambiguation pages, OK? I explained to you (on August 26, above) why this is a bad practice, why we don't do this, and what to do instead to be helpful, along with an invitation to chat if you desire further discussion, explanation, or help, which you didn't take me up on. The offer remains open.

You should stop doing this, and if you don't, that will make me unhappy, in addition to which, you will probably be blocked from further editing. Herostratus (talk) 18:00, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

List of Michigan writers

Just giving you a bit of a warning: you might get some guff over removing the redlinks. I got into a bit of an edit war with someone who insisted that the redlinks (pretty much focusing on one specific name) should remain because someone might write about them eventually, despite my insistence that the redlinked name in question did not pass notability guidelines for their own article and the likelihood of someone writing it is usually fairly low for any given article. I didn't want to create an article for them and nominate it for deletion just to prove a point, but it frustrated me enough to where I abandoned the page for the most part. There was a big discussion on the talk page, if you want to read through all that mess. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 06:30, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Please start adding brief edit summaries

Hi Cliff. While I really appreciate the additional names you've recently added to List of people from Missouri I'd like to ask a couple favors. 1) Please always add a brief edit summary of what change/addition you've implemented. It makes considerably less work for someone such as myself and other editors who actively patrol the page (and others) for potential vandalism. You don't need to write a book, just a few words...i.e. "Changed spelling of Evalyn Knapp so Wiki link works properly" or "Added Author Mark Twain". Just something so others can tell at a glance what was done w/o checking every change. 2) Please consider making multiple changes in one edit instead of changing/adding one name at a time. It's just sort of a Wiki "housekeeping" thing to make the edit history quicker to get through. Thanks for your help. Always appreciated. Have a great Wiki kind of day! ''Blind Faith''

Hi, thanks for your recent edits. The book and miniseries articles about Blind Faith are specifically about the book and miniseries, and not the extended details of the case itself. Their scope ends in 1987. Details of the next 30 years (including Marshall's death and even McGinnis' death) have no relevance there. That (and other) information is available in the appropriate biographical articles. Thanks again.— TAnthonyTalk 17:46, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Alums and notable people

Hi there, I've noticed you've been updating the list of Notable People for Valparaiso, Indiana. Typically, if the only connection for a person with a city is that they attended college in that city, they are included only on the list of notable alumni. Otherwise, the entire list of Valparaiso University alumni can be included in the list of people from Valparaiso, Indiana. The exceptions are for people who may have attended VU but ended up staying in or grew up in the city. I have to deal with that in my own hometown of Kent, Ohio. The lists are List of Kent State University alumni and List of people from Kent, Ohio. For university employees, if there is a source that directly states the notable employee (like a coach) lives in the specific city, then they can be included. If not, we can't assume that someone working for a given school actually lives in the city the school is located in (and quite often, they don't). One option is also to add a "see also" in the Notable people section to the notable alumni section of the university article. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. --JonRidinger (talk) 17:03, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Notables MUST have sources

[https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=East_Orange,_New_Jersey&curid=125163&diff=660080392&oldid=654579940 Your recent edit] added a notable to the article for East Orange, New Jersey without a source. Wikipedia policy requires that such entries have reliable and verifiable sources supporting the notable's connection to the place. How do you know he lived there? If you don't have the source, why add the entry to the article? If you do have a source, why not add it to the article when you add the entry? This is a matter of fundamental policy that must be observed in all articles. Further such entries will be deleted. Alansohn (talk) 01:33, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

:#Since he apparently won't (or can't) either talk or change, any block might as well be indefinite. Any non-indefinite block will presumably end with him editing exactly as before. Any indefinite block will be de facto permanent since he'd presumably be unable or unwilling to appeal.

It is not to reproduce the experience of reading or watching the story, nor to cover every detail. For those who have not read or seen the story, it should serve as a general overview of the major points. For those who have, it should be detailed enough to refresh their memory — no more. Dave Nicholson

Hello, and maybe with this post I can get you to respond (is there a contest? First prize?). Anyway, you edited the Nicholson page awhile back to include data about his massive home run which cleared the roof of Comiskey Park. I have "original research" (i.e. real life experience) about it, as I was lucky enough to a) be a Nicholson fan, and b) be one of the very few people sitting way up in the upper deck of left field when the ball was hit over our heads and...I and two friends with me heard it hit the roof and then saw it go over. We ran to the top of the stands, where you could look out, and saw people milling around the site where the ball landed. It was a magnificent home run. Big Nick ("Swish") had the oddest stance I've ever seen, and when he hit those home runs it was probably like seeing Ruth. If only he could have done it consistently. Good to meet you. Notables still MUST have sources

:Not necessarily required for bluelinks. The fact that it is a blue link establishes sufficient notability (in most cases, including this one; it wouldn't only for very large cities). Then, the linked article provides the references for the connection to Perth Amboy. While a ref might be be ideal, most "notable residents" sections of cities don't have them, so I wouldn't consider it a requirement. Herostratus (talk) 23:15, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
