Deletion of page for Category:Law enforcement articles without infoboxes
JJMC89 bot III has just speedily moved the :Category:Law enforcement articles without infoboxes to :Category:Law enforcement articles needing infoboxes without checking if this category is populated. It currently has about 450 article talk pages in it and these need to be moved to the new category by modifying the Template:Law enforcement banner. These categories are populated by banner attributes, not talk page categories. Can the deleted category please be reinstated until the template is modified and the articles have all been moved to the new category? - Cameron Dewe (talk) 22:52, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
:Also discovered :Category:Germany articles without infoboxes - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:28, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
:And :Category:Biography articles without infoboxes, which as 16,100+ existing article in the category, and 10 subcategories. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 03:23, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
: Please see the notice at the top of the page that indicates who you could contact (not me). Categories are always moved first, then their contents. — JJMC89 17:27, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks for the reply. I cannot find information that advises that "Categories are moved before their contents." Up to now, everything I have seen says "Categories should be empty before they are deleted." Hence, I was confused. When I went looking for discussions about these categories being moved, at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy and elsewhere, I could not find any discussions, anywhere. So I contacted you as a last resort, because that is what the instructions for a deletion review say to do - contact the page mover. If I should be contacting someone else, perhaps the message left by the bot should be more explicit and provide a permanent reference to the archived or (deleted) discussion to move a category, rather than just a link to a discussion page, where the discussion has been deleted from.
::Anyway, after about 4 hours, I finally resorted to requesting the protected banner, Template:Law enforcement, be amended. Others appear to have done the same thing with other affected banners. Unfortunately, the bot does not do this, but I noticed it also spends a long time (hours) scanning for every page listed in every category that it moves to find any pages that do have a category on them, to move them to the new category. So I wonder if in situations like this if things cannot be coordinated a bit better, especially when the categories have a notice that says the category is populated by a banner template (which needs to be amended, not pages amended.) If the banners were amended first, the old categories to be moved would be empty and it would not take so long to move them. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 20:45, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
:::For deletion, yes, empty first, but this was a move, not a deletion. The bot shouldn't be handling such cases at all, but admins are not following the instructions at WP:CFD/W ({{tq|If the category [...] requires template editing [...], list it at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Manual rather than here.}}), which is why I refer you to them. — JJMC89 17:22, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
: I wonder if it would be wise to retarget User talk:JJMC89 bot III to Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion instead of your talk page to send these CfD-related queries to a more appropriate place. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:32, 4 June 2025 (UTC)
JJMC89 bot question
Hi JJMC89. I've got a question about JJMC89 bot and NFCC#9 and NFCC#10c removals. How quickly does the bot remove such violations after it finds them? Does it wait for a fixed period of time after finding one (e.g. until after :User:JJMC89 bot/report/NFCC violations has been updated) or does it remove them as soon as it finds them? The reason I'm asking is because the last updated report shows several #10c violations that have yet to be removed. The bot has actually fixed some of the #10c violations and removed the #9 violations, but other #10c files it has yet to get to. This is not a complaint about the bot; I'm just trying to better understand how it operates. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:42, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
: Hi Marchjuly. It shouldn't take long for removals to occur. The bot moves immediately through these steps: report update → fix some rationales → removals. The bot logs issues it encounters at User:JJMC89 bot/log/FileRemoverBot. Many of the removal failures are due to transclusion but some the bot can't figure out the wikitext syntax. — JJMC89 17:55, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks for clarifying. FWIW, I usually leave the whatever files show up in the report as is because the bot does get to them fairly quickly, but sometimes I will manually do whatever is needed myself if it seems the bot missed something after one of its runs. Does that muck things up for the bot? -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:55, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
:::No, it doesn't. — JJMC89 23:46, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
Preserve rcats
Could JJMC89 bot III please be told [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:16th-century_American_women&diff=1294244803&oldid=1294213896 preserve the rcats parameter] of {{tl|category redirect}} instead of [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:16th-century_American_women&diff=prev&oldid=1294217035 clobbering it]? Thanks. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:42, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
: I am not inclined to add any parsing for redirecting categories. (It currently just replaces the entire contents of the page.) The simplest solution is to make sure it is removed from CFD/W before making updates. — JJMC89 18:06, 7 June 2025 (UTC)
Popular Forces emblem in Gaza War infobox
The [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emblem_of_Popular_Forces.svg emblem] of the Popular Forces in Template:Gaza war infobox was [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Gaza_war_infobox&diff=prev&oldid=1294678407 removed] by your bot for violating non-free content policy. I am requesting for the bot to exempt this edit in future, as the template page is intended solely for the mainspace Gaza war article. President Loki (talk) 17:21, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
