Vale of Catmose

The Vale of Catmose is an area of relatively low-lying land, much of which is flooded by Rutland Water, in western Rutland, England.{{cite map|title=Ordnance Survey: Landranger map sheet 141 Kettering & Corby (Market Harborough & Stamford)|ISBN= 9780319229866 |publisher=Ordnance Survey|date=2014}} Oakham, the county town, lies within its bounds. It is drained by the River Gwash and the Langham Brook. The name was recorded in 1576 as Val of Catmouse; the etymological meaning is 'bog or marsh frequented by (wild)cats' (Old English catt + mos 'bog, marsh, moss,' with Middle English vale 'valley').A.D.
