This plant grows {{convert|20|-|40|cm|0}} high with compound leaves in triplets and is usually found in dense patches. It gets its name from the small delicate white flowers with petal-like sepals that are swept back abruptly as if in the process of turning inside out. The genus honors George Vancouver, the 18th-century explorer of the Pacific Northwest.{{cite web | url= http://biology.burke.washington.edu/herbarium/imagecollection.php?Genus=Vancouveria&Species=hexandra | editor-last= Giblin | editor-first= David | date= 2015 | title= Vancouveria hexandra | website= WTU Herbarium Image Collection | publisher= Burke Museum, University of Washington | accessdate= 2015-04-23}}{{cite web | url= http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/get_IJM.pl?tid=Vancouveria%20hexandra | date= 2015 | title= Vancouveria hexandra | website= Jepson eFlora: Taxon page | publisher= Jepson Herbarium; University of California, Berkeley | accessdate= 2015-04-23}}{{cite journal|last1=Yamamoto|first1=Hirobumi|last2=Yan|first2=Kuang|last3=Ieda|first3=Kyoko|last4=Tanaka |first4=Toshiyuki |last5=Iinuma |first5=Munekazu|last6=Mizuno|first6=Mizuo|title=Flavonol glycosides production in cell suspension cultures of Vancouveria hexandra |journal=Phytochemistry|date=July 1993|volume=33|issue=4|pages=841–846|doi=10.1016/0031-9422(93)85287-2}}
