History
In 1917, the mountain{{emdash}}which had been labelled as Sheep Mountain on George Dawson's 1886 map, and Goat Mountain in Kootenay Brown{{cite peakfinder|id=1462|name=Vimy Peak|access-date=2019-08-19}}{{emdash}}was renamed in honour of the Canadian Army's significant victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.{{cite book |title=Place-names of Alberta |date=1928 |publisher=Geographic Board |hdl=2027/mdp.39015070267029 |hdl-access=free |page=129 }} According to a 1989 article in the Proceedings of the Geologists' Association journal,{{cite journal |last1=Rosenbaum |first1=M.S. |title=Geological influence on tunnelling under the Western Front at Vimy Ridge |journal=Proceedings of the Geologists' Association |date=January 1989 |volume=100 |issue=1 |pages=135–140 |doi=10.1016/S0016-7878(89)80072-0 |bibcode=1989PrGA..100..135R }} This mountain's name was officially adopted in 1943 by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
Geology
Like other mountains in Waterton Lakes National Park, Vimy Peak is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Precambrian to Jurassic periods. Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was pushed east and over the top of younger Cretaceous period rock during the Laramide orogeny.{{cite web |url=https://www.bengadd.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Geology-of-the-Rockies-and-Columbias-plus-time-scale-2014.pdf |last=Gadd |first=Ben |date=June 2016 |title=Geology of the Canadian Rockies and Columbia Mountains }}{{self-published inline|date=April 2025}}
Climate
Based on the Köppen climate classification, Vimy Peak is located in a subarctic climate with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.{{cite journal |last1=Peel |first1=M. C. |last2=Finlayson |first2=B. L. |last3=McMahon |first3=T.
