History
Formed in April 2011, Something Clever was founded by long-time friends Michael Brennan (lead vocals), Kelly Flusk (lead guitar), Chris St. Hilaire (rhythm guitar), Allen Vogt (bass guitar), and Dylan Roles (drums). The band quickly built a local fan base by performing at various venues in Charlotte, North Carolina, and sharing demo recordings of original music through platforms like ReverbNation.{{cite web |title=Something Clever Artist Profile on ReverbNation |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131030020638/http://www.reverbnation.com/somethingclever |website=Archive.org |publisher=ReverbNation Staff |access-date=30 October 2013}}
By early 2012, the group began focusing on writing and recording material for their first commercial release. During this period, on April 5, 2012, they announced via Facebook that they were seeking a new bass player, as Allen Vogt planned to move out of the area and transfer schools. Despite the lineup change, the band continued their momentum, releasing their debut single, "Black and Blue," on June 14, 2012.
Walk Away was released on July 7, 2012.{{cite web |title=CadiesArt.com Something Clever Bio |url=https://www.cadiesart.com/client/SomethingClever |website=CadiesArt.com |publisher=CadiesArt |access-date=23 April 2025}} The seven-track record was produced and engineered by Michael Pepe and marked the band's first official release. Walk Away is notable for being the only project to feature original lead vocalist Michael Brennan before his departure in 2013.{{cite web |title=Something Clever Homepage & Backstory |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121116123059/http://www.somethingcleverband.com/home.cfm |website=Internet Archive |publisher=Brandon Hinson |access-date=16 November 2012}}
In the same year as the EP’s release, Something Clever won the Ernie Ball and Rockstar Energy Drink Battle of the Bands in Simpsonville, South Carolina, taking first place across all voting categories. They also received national exposure around this time by playing concerts alongside Adelitas Way, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Saving Abel, and Sum 41. Additionally, the band was commissioned to create music for WSOC-TV’s high school football segment, which aired during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.{{cite web |title=Something Clever Band Bio |url=https://www.thebash.com/acoustic-band/somethingclever |website=The Bash |publisher=Staff |access-date=23 April 2025}}
Singles
The EP features one promotional single, "Black and Blue," which was released on June 14, 2012. The track was made available digitally ahead of the full EP release, serving as an introduction to the band's emerging sound.{{cite web |title=Band Biography: Something Clever |url=https://www.sonicbids.com/band/something-clever/?destination=%2Fband%2Flucandthelovingtons%2F%3F |website=SonicBids.com |publisher=Brandon Hinson |access-date=23 April 2025}}
Promotion
Due to the band being unsigned and releasing the EP independently through Tunecore, promotion was largely grassroots. The band relied on private social media platforms, regional live performances, and word-of-mouth to raise awareness for the release. This approach helped them build a local following in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas.{{cite web |title=Band History on SonicHit |url=https://sonichits.com/artist/Something_Clever |website=SonicHits.com |publisher=SonicHits |access-date=23 April 2025}}
