Weiteveen is a village in the Netherlands and is part of the Emmen municipality in Drenthe.
History
Weiteveen started in the 1850s by Hannoverian settlers who settled in the Amsterdamscheveld.{{cite web|url=https://www.geheugenvandrenthe.nl/weiteveen |title=Weiteveen |website=Geheugen van Drenthe |access-date=11 March 2022 |language=nl}} They built sod houses, started excavating the peat, and planting buckwheat on the burnt fields.{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/weiteveen |title=Weiteveen - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=11 March 2022 |language=nl}} In 1919, the Mary Queen of Peace Church was built in the village. In 1924, a protestant settlement appeared. Up to 1954, the area was known as Nieuw-Schoonebekerveld. In 1954, the border between Emmen and Schoonebeek was redrawn, and the two settlements merged as Weiteveen. The name is a combination of buckwheat and bog.{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/weiteveen |title=Weiteveen |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=11 March 2022 |language=nl}}
In 1925, the tabernacle of the Mary Queen of Peace Church was stolen. Money was raised among the Catholics in the Netherlands to buy a new tabernacle. A week later, the stolen item was discovered in the moorland.{{cite news|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/view?query=Weiteveen+tabernakel&coll=ddd&page=2&identifier=ddd:011234666:mpeg21:a0115&resultsidentifier=ddd:011234666:mpeg21:a0115&rowid=2 |title=Drentse veenparochie jubileert |website=De Tijd De Maasbode |date=13 June 1959 |language=nl |access-date=11 March 2022}}{{cite news|url=https://www.delpher.nl/nl/kranten/view?query=Weiteveen+tabernakel&coll=ddd&identifier=MMKB23:001276036:mpeg21:a00104&resultsidentifier=MMKB23:001276036:mpeg21:a00104&rowid=4 |title=In 1925 stalen onverlaten tabernakel met H.Hosties |website=Overijsselsch dagblad |date=12 June 1959 |language=nl |access-date=11 March 2022}} A chapel has been constructed at the site where the tabernacle was found.
