History

The competition was held at the White City Stadium in Cardiff from 1928 to 1937. The competition was sometimes run as a handicap race.{{cite news |url=https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000104/19340528/104/0003 |title=Valiant Rufus wins Welsh Derby |work=Western Mail |date=28 May 1934 |via=British Newspaper Archive|url-access=subscription |access-date=17 May 2024}}

After the closure of White City, the race switched to the Cardiff Arms Park from 1945 until 1977. It gained classic status in 1971.{{cite book|last=Genders|first=Roy|title=NGRC book of Greyhound Racing, pages 104-105|year=1990|publisher=Pelham Books Ltd|isbn=0-7207-1804-X}}

When the Cardiff Arms Park closed to greyhound racing there was no remaining fully licensed National Greyhound Racing Club track in Wales resulting in the race discontinuing.{{cite book|last=Barnes|first=Julia|title=Daily Mirror Greyhound Fact File|year=1988|publisher=Ringpress Books|isbn=0-948955-15-5}} During the vast majority of its existence the race formed part of the triple crown of racing alongside the English Greyhound Derby and Scottish Greyhound Derby.{{cite book|last=Genders|first=Roy|title=The Greyhound and Racing Greyhound|year=1975|publisher=Page Brothers (Norwich)|isbn=0-85020-0474}}

The famous Mick the Miller, who was a household name during the 1930s won the event in 1930.{{cite book|last=Dack|first=Barrie|title=Greyhound Derby, the first 60 years, pages 59-61|year=1990|publisher=Ringpress Books|isbn=0-948955-36-8}}{{cite book|last=Tanner|first=Michael|title=The Legend of Mick the Miller: Sporting Icon of the Depression|year=2004|publisher=Newbury: Highdown|isbn=978-1-904317-67-8}}
