This should revert to Ottoman architecture, like :Category:Byzantine architecture and various period/region-based sub-cats of :Category:Islamic architecture & :Category:Arabic architecture. – Fayenatic London 19:47, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

• Note: this nomination depends on reading "Ottoman architecture" as a period or style rather than as a country. Pro: the lead article is Ottoman architecture which says, "Ottoman architecture is the architectural style that developed under the Ottoman Empire." The category also has extensive sub-cats by country e.g. {{c|Ottoman architecture in Greece‎}} and by building type e.g. {{c|Ottoman bridges}}. Con: it does have one sub-cat for a different architectural period or style, {{c|Baroque architecture in the Ottoman Empire‎}}; I suggest that this should be moved up, and linked using "see also" rather than as a sub-cat. – Fayenatic London 15:52, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

• That's a good question. Many guides to architectural styles do not include it (but that might be due to Western cultural bias). The lead article covers multiple (sub-?)periods/styles including Early Ottoman architecture, Classical Ottoman architecture and Ottoman Baroque architecture. When I made this nomination I did not realise that the word "style" has only very recently been inserted into the lede of Ottoman architecture by R Prazeres. [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ottoman_architecture&diff=1123800178&oldid=1123777434] I now think that word should be removed. However, Ottoman is still notably an architectural period in the history of several countries, e.g. [https://libyanheritagehouse.org/architecture/ottoman-architecture-libya Libya], so :Category:Ottoman architecture by country and it sub-cats should not be renamed. Moreover, the Diyanet Center of America is stated to be built in the Ottoman style (uncited but looks right), but America was never in the Ottoman Empire. – Fayenatic London 13:44, 23 December 2022 (UTC)

• Support move (or another alternative). I think we've been overthinking the semantics of category names a little and we're trying to ascertain questions that scholars of these topics arem't necessarily concerned with. Ottoman architecture is both a stylistic and chronological designation. It's probably closer in concept to something like :Category:Mughal architecture or perhaps :Category:Ming dynasty architecture. There is clearly a distinct style that anyone familiar with the topic would recognize, and as Dogan Kuban (for example) explains in [https://books.google.ca/books/about/Ottoman_Architecture.html?id=nX5OPgAACAAJ&redir_esc=y his long volume] (e.g. p.679; book also cited throughout the main article), it is a style that is primarily found in the center of the empire and some of its most dependent provinces, while beyond these areas it is either absent or blended variably into local traditions. The issue is also complicated by a 600-year development, with uneven levels of change across this period. Frankly, this is how many non-Western architectural history topics are treated, so I'm nervous about trying to make each potential category fit into ideas that work primarily with Western art history. At any rate, my instinct is that it's weird to define it as a geographic category, for the reasons above and because it's a state that is long extinct and whose territories changed widely over 600 years, which makes it very unclear what scope this category would have.

:So, mainly for practical purposes, I'd support changing it to Ottoman architecture, if we want to stick to the common name of the topic (and the corresponding main article). But :Category:Architecture of the Ottoman period might also be equally workable. For the country-specific subcats, another option likewise would be to title them along the lines of ":Category:Architecture in Greece during the Ottoman period", which avoids a stylistic statement that is variably applicable or non-applicable to different areas. I had argued this issue earlier during a specific recent proposed rename for the Algeria and Tunisia categories (proposal ended without consensus). R Prazeres (talk) 18:06, 23 December 2022 (UTC)

The underlying issue is :Category:Architecture in Turkey by period or style under :Category:Architecture by country and period or style. Really hate those triple intersections, especially mashups (period or style). KISS.
