::*:Yes (as part of its colonial project, France has historically denied the identity of those they colonise). But its also legally autonomous, an Overseas country of France, and the French Polynesians certainly seem to have a sense of themselves as a separate place and to want more autonomy (every domestic French Polynesian political party is at least pro-autonomy, and the election was just won by those pushing for full independence). As for how this translates into a category structure, I think its fine to include French Polynesian categories under French ones (in the same way as would be done for say a normal French province), but not to merge them into it.   • Note - as a general note for all of these: WPSMALLCAT is based on the idea of "no potential for growth". Wikipedia:WikiProject Polynesia/French Polynesia work group has been historically neglected and currently has fewer than 1400 articles. I've been working (slowly) on remedying that, partly by translating articles from French Wikipedia, partly by writing new ones (unfortunately, I've been distracted recently by having to fix a bunch of BLPs from Fiji). Some of these categories are likely to expand in future; if they are deleted, then some may need to be re-created to avoid undercategorisation.--IdiotSavant (talk) 00:46, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

:*Reply That argument cannot be maintained. French Canadian refers to an ethnic group; French Polynesia is not an ethnic group. Instead, French Polynesia refers to a rather random collection of islands that were colonised by France. Some neighbouring islands were colonised by other Great Powers and so are not in French Polynesia, despite their geographic proximity. The ethnic links among islands and groups of islands are stronger than French boundaries and transcend colonial demarcation.   • Even further comment None of those mention multi-ethlic empires such as the Ottoman Empire, Roman Empire, Holy Roman Empire. Why? Because it is difficult / futile to construct demonyms for them. The same is true for countries with compound names such as Democratic Republic of Congo and many former, mainly colonial era, countries. Applying a fake or forced demonym is just post hoc justification of colonization; we should have nothing to do with it, especially when a solution that avoids such an outcome is so readily to hand.   • Comment - the category is not intended to be an ethnic group, but just to cover people from that part of the world. Because that part of the world was and still is colonised, its has an ugly colonial name (rather like "New Zealand" TBH). That's an unpleasant reality, but wikipedia should honestly reflect it.
