Engaging with Wikipedia: Wikipedia edit-a-thon and the ARTT tool

Presented by:

:Wikimedia DC and the Analysis Responses Toolkit for Trust team

Event description

:As the world’s largest online Encyclopedia, Wikipedia is often one’s first stop when seeking information. For this reason, it is vital that content shared there remains accurate and free of mis- and disinformation.

:Wikimedia DC, an official chapter affiliate of Wikipedia and other projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, will facilitate an edit-a-thon with the goal of creating and improving Wikipedia content about scientific topics. Editors of all experience levels are invited to participate.

:New editors will learn about Wikipedia notability requirements, oversight practices, and basic editing functions.

:In addition to learning how to edit Wikipedia, attendees will hear about the Analysis Responses Toolkit for Trust, an interactive tool that incorporates Wikipedia and other sources to help people engage in trust-building ways when discussing vaccine efficacy and other topics online.

:The Wikipedia editing training session is one-hour long and will be offered once at the start the event. Please arrive on-time if you intend to learn how to edit Wikipedia.

Goal: Create drafts of new Wikipedia articles. Move articles from draft form to Wikipedia main space when ready.

Note: It's best for new editors to start articles as drafts.

  • Use this [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cD6NNoZFm78e0qPUtbaIhCzeLEV5-0oRiiHY6o-JUCg/edit?usp=sharing Google sheet] to reserve the article. If working on an article that's not on the list, please add and reserve it before beginning.
  • Return to this page and select the article's red link to open a blank page

::* Tip: Be sure to add a header titled 'References' at the bottom of the page before you begin.

  • Publish as you go (blue button, top right)
  • Select 'Edit' to re-open the draft and keep working
  • Once you are pleased with the article, publish one last time.
  • Select the 'Move' button (top right next to View History). Note: This button may not be visible to new editors. Ariel can deactivate this restriction. Be sure to sign in to the :[https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/WIkimedia_DC_and_ARTT/Nobel_Solution_Session_-_Edit-a-thon_and_ARTT?enroll=fdotirwy Dashboard] so she has your username.
