I recently returned to Wikipedia after a long absence, but am not finding editing to be as enjoyable as I once did. I am preparing to request a courtesy vanishing, but wanted to delete my own talk page first. My Core Competency is Competency (talk) 21:28, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
- Comment: Can you elaborate more on why you would like all 1,143 revisions of your talk page deleted (or made inaccessible to non-admins), and why page moving/removal of content/revision deletion/oversight wouldn't be adequate for your situation? (If there is non-public information involved, feel free to email me or ArbCom). I'm not comfortable at all with the idea of deleting so many revisions of peoples' conversations without a very good reason. I've never encountered a request like this in my several years of patrolling MFD, and the last time that I'm aware removal of a user's talk page was even contemplated back in 2010, it was swiftly reversed (in fact that discussion led to the requirement for people to post here to get their user talk pages deleted). As an aside, user talk pages are not indexed by search engines. Graham87 08:46, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- My thinking is that since an account cannot be deleted, which is what I would do if that were an option, then the next closest thing would be to delete all my user pages followed by a courtesy vanishing and a random changing of my password (to hinder future access). Psychologically, deleting of the talk page before the courtesy vanishing would be analogous, for me, to deleting all the friends from a Facebook account before deleting the account (which I did almost ten years ago and never looked back) in that even if the desire to try to restore the account arose in me, I know it would be extremely hard and there would be absolutely nothing to go back to. I realize I am not entitled to any deletion or vanishing, and if blanking the talk page is the best I can do then that will have to suffice; but I thought it could not hurt to ask. --My Core Competency is Competency (talk) 11:58, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Ah, that makes sense. In this case, I think blanking will have to do, but vanishing (i.e. renaming your account to a random username) should be fine, if you request that. Graham87 14:14, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Just out of curiosity, if I want to go out with a bang, and make this a big thing, is there a place I can appeal for deletion of the talk page? --My Core Competency is Competency (talk) 14:24, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- The arbcom mailing list, I guess, but I don't think they'd be likely to grant it without privacy concerns. Apart from that, nope. Other people might come to this discussion with a different view, of course. Graham87 15:09, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Let me post a link over at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and see if we can get more comments here. --My Core Competency is Competency (talk) 16:20, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Strong oppose There is absolutely no reason why this should be treated as a unique case. --NeilN talk to me 16:26, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Posting here from AN/I (at which I already commented), viz: Oppose 'That should not happen. Unless it contains any material strongly breaching either policy or statute, the talk page hstory needs to be preserved.' — O Fortuna! Imperatrix mundi. 16:35, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose.' Going out with a bang? [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/User_talk:My_Core_Competency_is_Competency&diff=770282756&oldid=770281631]. No. Tiderolls 16:38, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Your responses, the strong opinions, this strong opposition, this is the "bang"; but maybe "fizzle" would have been a better choice of word ;) --My Core Competency is Competency (talk) 16:47, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
:::It's a crying shame, because your stats indicate you're a bloody good editor, albeit one who has slowed done over the last few years. Nothing wrong with that, certainly. — O Fortuna! Imperatrix mundi. 16:51, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
::::*Thank you for the compliment! --My Core Competency is Competency (talk) 16:54, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Keep - user talk pages should be maintained as they contain a history of interaction with other editors which could pertain to editorial and/or behavioral actions. — xaosflux Talk 17:06, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose/Keep and WP:BOLDly suggest WP:SNOW close: Because let's be honest. What reason is there to IAR in this situation? And what is the likelihood of anyone else finding such a strong reason to give it the chop?
{{retired}} could probably do what this user is after, perhaps? MM ('"HURRRR?"') (Hmmmmm.) 17:22, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose - Blanking or vanishing seems sufficient. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:57, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
:*Looks like the editor has already chosen to vanish by having his account re-named by a Meta functionary, so this MfD is moot. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:59, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
