As best as I can tell, the Wikiproject Portals is placing links to non-existent portals into pages in mainspace like Mafia as well as pages in userspace like User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox03 and draft outlines. Then they are running a bot every two days to generate this page as a to do list. This is circular. This process should stop. The bot should also stop, but if we remove the to do list the bot process will become pointless. Legacypac (talk) 09:53, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Delete Look at all the disruption caused by these pointless portals with editors having to waste time nominating, voting and deleting hundreds of wtf pages. Johnuniq (talk) 10:04, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
:Keep: This list only lists portals that are linked to from article, template or category namespaces so portals on User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox03 won't be listed. Also when a portal link is placed in mainspace that is non-existent it has to be in a {{tl|Portal}} (or similar) template, so wikilinks won't be counted by the bot. I have not seen portal project participants placing links to non-existent portals when they were non-existent at the time and I would like to see recent (post project reboot) examples before I consider that argument worth considering. It is useful also to remove portals listed in {{tl|Portal}} templates which have been deleted too. Also it is up to an editor to create a portal and this list is only a tool. ::Can you explain why some of the redlinks are only linked from sandbox3 then? Can you explain why some say they are linked from pages that have no mention of a portal on them? Perhaps the portal link is buried on the template and not displaying...
::As an example at Mafia#Sources if you open the edit window you can see Mafia included in the list of portals but it is not displayed to readers. I don't know that link was inserted but it hardly seems like a "request"
::The whole thing looks misleading at best to call these "Wanted portals" Legacypac (talk) 10:22, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
:::If you can provide examples I can provide bug fixes. I can with 99.99% accuracy say you are wrong as in the python code which implements the bot is written:
:::
:::This code above means that only pages with namespace numbers of 0, 1, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 100, 108, 118, 446, 710, 828, 2300 or 2302 are used to calculate this list. As you can see 2 and 3 are not listed (which is user and user talk).
:::This list only lists portals which are linked using a {{tl|Portal}} template or similar on a page and an editor has placed this link at some point on the page. Redlinked portals are deliberately not shown using these templates. See Template_talk:Portal#Optionally_link_only_to_portals_which_actually_exists and the diff which implements this. This list is useful still as it:
:::* can help editors remove links to portals when the portal won't be created (to stop potential confusion on the articles with the portal template for new editors)
:::* can help editors see what links are being added by other editors and then see portals, if created, that would then have a lot of incoming links straight away.
:::Also a MfD isn't needed to change the name of a page. If you want to change the name go to WP:RM or just move it. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 11:13, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

- Delete - I don't fully understand this list but I understand it well enough to know that it needs deleting. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:52, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Delete as that page is madness e.g. it says a portal is wanted for San Antonio Express News because it is linked from Stephen R. Lorenz (an article that uses the newspaper as a source). DexDor (talk) 21:49, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
::{{ping|DexDor}} Because an editor placed "San Antonio Express News" in the {{tl|Portal}} template on the page. Dreamy Jazz 🎷 talk to me | my contributions 09:27, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
- Comment: I'll disable the bot and mark the page for deletion. This being the last thing I was actively doing on Wikipedia means from now I am retired. All bot functions will be disabled. 09:30, 18 March 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dreamy Jazz (talk • contribs)
