Welcome to the gender gap task force (GGTF), one of the task forces of WikiProject Countering systemic bias. The GGTF was started in 2013 to address some of the problems women face on Wikipedia, whether as editors or article subjects. After its formation, the task force became a central location for discussing gender on Wikipedia during GamerGate, which was a harassment campaign in 2014. In the following year, two of the task force's most active members were banned. These events established the GGTF as an community-defining space of contestation within Wikipedia's public sphere.{{cite journal |last1=Jankowski |first1=Steve |title=Becoming Wikipedian women: a sociotechnical history of the Gender Gap Task Force (2013-2023) |journal=Internet Histories |date=2024 |volume=0 |issue=0 |pages=1-22 |doi=10.1080/24701475.2024.2425150 |url=https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/24701475.2024.2425150 |access-date=March 18, 2025}} If you'd like to help, please add your name to the list of participants.

Issues that discourage women from editing include a perception of Wikipedia as sexist; a lack of confidence and spare time; problems with the editing interface; the belief that editing is tedious; unease because of the inclusion of pornography; and fewer opportunities to develop social relationships than on other websites.{{cite web | last = Gardner | first =Sue | author-link = Sue Gardner | title = Nine reasons women don't edit Wikipedia (in their own words) | url = http://suegardner.org/2011/02/19/nine-reasons-why-women-dont-edit-wikipedia-in-their-own-words/ | website = suegardner.org | date = 19 February 2011 }}{{cite news | last = Staff writer | title = Wikipedia 'completely failed' to fix gender imbalance | url = http://www.bbc.com/news/business-28701772 | work = BBC News | publisher = BBC | date = 8 August 2014 }} Despite significant evidence to the contrary, certain commentators have denied that the gender gap is a problem, citing efforts to highlight it as "feminist ideology."{{Cite journal | last1 = Eckert | first1 = Stine | last2 = Steiner | first2 = Linda | author-link2 = Linda Steiner | title = (Re)triggering backlash: responses to news about Wikipedia’s gender gap | journal = Journal of Communication Inquiry | volume = 37 | issue = 4 | pages = 284-303 | doi = 10.1177/0196859913505618 | date = October 2013 | url = http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0196859913505618}}
