Tasks

This page contains a list of open tasks for the Heraldry and Vexillology Wikiproject. If you want to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of heraldry and vexillology, pick a task from the list below. Feel free to add tasks to the appropriate sections, or discuss them on the talk page.

Tasks involving more than one article

=Heraldry by Country Series ([[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology/Heraldry by country|talk]])=

A series of articles about the use of heraldry of different countries, ideally featuring the following points:

  • Origins/History
  • Usage of arms(by whom? nobility/gentry/towns/corporations/anyone)
  • Regulation (uncontrolled/government dept/law/heralds)
  • Distinctive Features of that country's heraldry
  • Current Usage

Add the template {{Heraldry by country}} at the bottom of the article to produce the following navbox

{{Heraldry by country}}

Click on a red link above to create a new article. Click on a blue link for an existing article, which probably needs improvement. Edit the template to add/remove countries.

=Assessment=

The quality of articles within the scope of the project can now be assessed by adding a class parameter to the {{tl|WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology}} template on an article's talk page, e.g. {{WikiProject Heraldry and vexillology|class=stub}}. Rating articles in this way allows us to see what articles we need to focus on, and tracking the number of articles in different classes over time will gives us a quantitative measure of the improvement in Wikipedia's coverage of heraldry and vexillology. At the moment around 80 articles need to be assessed. See the assessment department for more details.

=Officers of Arms in the ODNB=

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography contains a large number of biographies of British officers of arms. It would be good if we could get a decent article of each of these heralds. A list can be found here. The ODNB article can obviously be used as a source, see the [http://www.oxforddnb.com ODNB website]. Most public libraries in the UK and Ireland allow their members to access the ODNB website from home, see here for [http://www.oup.com/oxforddnb/info/freeodnb/libraries/ more information]

=Improving national flag pages=

It would be useful to develop recommended guidelines for national flag pages (Flag of ... pages), including improving and promulgating the :Template:National flag infobox.

=Slovakia Municipality task force=

The Slovakia City task force has been made to improve the flags of the cities, towns, and municipalities across Slovakia. Participation is encouraged and greatly appreciated!

=Replacing or removing FOTW citations=

Per WP:FOTW, Flags of the World ([https://fotw.info fotw.info]) is not considered a reliable source. However, much of Wikipedia's coverage of flags, especially more obscure ones, seems to rely on this website. If you see an article cite FOTW as a source, see if you can replace it with a more reliable source. FOTW sometimes cites their sources, in which case you can link directly to the source they cite. If FOTW does not cite a source, and no better source can be found, the information should be removed, or at least tagged with {{better source needed}}. Note that there are several clones of the site: [http://fotw.info fotw.info], [https://crwflags.com/fotw/flags crwflags.com], [http://fotw.areciboweb.com fotw.areciboweb.com], [https://flags.kircho.net flags.kircho.net], and [http://fotw.ethnia.org fotw.ethnia.org], among others.

  • The image of the flag of the United States Commissioner of Fisheries (see File:Flag of the United States Commissioner of Fisheries.svg) was flagged as a candidate to be copied to Wikimedia Commons long ago, but it never has been copied. Someone who knows how should copy it over.
  • Improve the vector version of the Flag of Michigan (see talk) by combining [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/b/b5/20220304035436%21Flag_of_Michigan.svg the clarity of the existing version] with [https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/b/b5/20220304144741!Flag_of_Michigan.svg the details of the machine-vectorized version.] (compare with [https://nicic.gov/sites/default/files/mapplic_thumbs/Flag_of_michigan.jpg raster version].) • w:File:Flag of the United States.svg needs color updated. The colors on the current file are based on a late 2000's modification of the white point of RGB values determined via a 1946 Military standard (per Flag_of_the_United_States#Cable_colors_in_CIE). In 2012, the Department of State provided [https://eca.state.gov/files/bureau/eca%20design%20guide.pdf definitive RGB value standards], cited in the main article. Multiple complaints have been made that the current colors render as an inaccurate purple-ish shade on most monitors, and multiple requests have been made to update to the new standard. Those with the power to change it have repeatedly refused. Many of those disputes on the article talk page have been deleted (still available in history). Many remain on the [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:Flag_of_the_United_States.svg talk page of the Commons file]. TheTaraStark (talk) 19:44, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
