Women's Entrepreneurship Day (WED) celebrated annually on November 15 is a day on which the work of women entrepreneurs is observed and discussed, held each year.{{cite web|title=WED {{!}} Women's Entrepreneurship Day|url=https://www.womenseday.org/|website=www.womenseday.org|accessdate=29 November 2021}} The inaugural event was held in New York City at the United Nations, with additional events being held simultaneously in several other countries. 144 nations overall recognized the first WED in 2014, which included the presentation of the Women's Entrepreneurship Day Pioneer Awards. The organization behind WED also has an ambassadorship and fellowship program.

History

Women's Entrepreneurship Day was founded and implemented by Pet Pioneer, Animal Fair Media{{cite web|title=About Wendy|url=http://animalfair.com/about/|website=www.animalfair.com|date=13 June 2009 |accessdate=11 May 2016}} Founder and Ellis Island Medal of Honor{{cite web|url=http://www.neco.org/medal-of-honor/2016-medalists|title=Congratulations to the 2016 Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipients!|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170225195246/http://www.neco.org/medal-of-honor/2016-medalists|archive-date=2017-02-25|website=www.Neco.org|accessdate=9 May 2016}} recipient Wendy Diamond, after volunteering with the Adelante Foundation who provides microcredit to low income women while in Honduras. Upon her return to the US she decided she wanted to develop something to help this and similar philanthropic causes. The first day was held on November 19, 2014, and was observed in 144 countries that year.{{cite web |author=Paula Duran |accessdate=April 6, 2015 |url=http://www.marieclaire.com/politics/news/a11629/womens-entrepreneurship-day/ |work=Marie Claire |date=November 20, 2014 |title=Women Entrepreneurs of the World, Unite!}} It was described by Fortune as "a global movement to celebrate and support female founders and shed light on some of their challenges."{{cite web |url=http://fortune.com/2014/11/19/womens-entrepreneur-day/ |work=Fortune |accessdate=April 6, 2015 |title=Women's Entrepreneurship Day: Time to debunk some myths |author=Caroline Fairchild |date=November 19, 2014}} Forbes Magazine wrote that the intention was also "to mobilize a global network of female business owners, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who support and empower this community of women entrepreneurs and their businesses."{{cite web |url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/ey/2014/11/19/on-womens-entrepreneurship-day-its-time-to-fund-to-scale/ |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141119194021/http://www.forbes.com/sites/ey/2014/11/19/on-womens-entrepreneurship-day-its-time-to-fund-to-scale/ |url-status=dead |archive-date=November 19, 2014 |work=Forbes Magazine |date=November 19, 2014 |title=On Women's Entrepreneurship Day – It's Time To Fund To Scale |author=Kerrie MacPherson |accessdate=April 6, 2015}} November 19 was proclaimed an "official day" by both New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and is celebrated annually at the United Nations and around the globe.

Women's Entrepreneurship Day got moved to November 15 in 2024 to avoid clashing with International Men's Day which has been celebrated annually on every November 19 every year since 1999. 15 years before WED was put on that same date. This was moved for fairness as International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8 every year since 1914 (1st celebrated on March 19 1911) to celebrate Women's achievements and to push for gender equality. Many thought that Women's Entrepreneurship Day being held on the same date as International Men's Day, was not fair and was a way to silence Men's issue and Men's mental health and well being.
