History
Norman Borlaug (1914–2009) was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for contributions that resulted in the extensive increase in global food production.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=132}} Chairperson of the Nobel Committee Aase Lionæs gave the rationale that the committee had linked providing much needed food to the world as a path for peace.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=132}} Further, the increase in food production has given policy planners across the world more years in figuring out how to feed the growing population.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=132}} 12 years later, Borlaug approached the Nobel Foundation to include a prize for food and agriculture. However, the Foundation was bound by Alfred Nobel's will which did not allow for the creation of such a new prize.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=136}} Borlaug continued his search for a sponsor elsewhere.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=136}}
In 1986, General Foods Corporation, under Vice President A. S. Clausi's leadership, agreed to establish the prize and be the founding sponsor.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=137}}{{Cite web|last=Clausi|first=A.S.|date=1 October 2009|title=Letters|url=https://www.ift.org/news-and-publications/food-technology-magazine/issues/2009/october/departments/letters|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211205090106/https://www.ift.org/news-and-publications/food-technology-magazine/issues/2009/october/departments/letters|archive-date=5 December 2021|access-date=5 December 2021|website=Institute of Food Technologists|quote=Although the idea of an Agriculture Prize was Norman's, the Food Prize was established by General Foods Corporation under{{spaces|hair}}...}} The amount they agreed to, US${{hair space}}200,000, was equivalent to the value of the Nobel Prizes at the time.{{sfnp|Hesser, The Man Who Fed the World|2006|p=137}}{{Cite web|last1=Polsky|first1=Barry|last2=Curtin|first2=Tracy|title=Biography: Dr Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan|url=https://www.worldfoodprize.org/documents/filelibrary/1987_swaminathan/Biography__Dr_CF0F0421ADC17.pdf|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211130125150/https://www.worldfoodprize.org/documents/filelibrary/1987_swaminathan/Biography__Dr_CF0F0421ADC17.pdf|archive-date=30 November 2021|access-date=10 December 2021|website=The World Food Prize Foundation|publisher=General Foods World Food Prize}} In 1990, the sponsorship was taken over by businessman and philanthropist John Ruan and his family.
