History

The York County library system first came into existence on February 13, 1974 when York County commissioners passed legislation allowing for the federation of the area's libraries.{{cite news |title=County Library System to Debut |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/34463868/york_libraries_creation_281974/ |access-date=1 August 2019 |work=York Daily Record |volume=172|issue=92 |date=8 Feb 1974|via=Newspapers.com}}{{free access}} The impetus for its creation was the 1964 Library Services and Construction Act which appropriated money "to promote the further development of public library services."{{cite web |title=Public Law 88-269 |url=https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/STATUTE-78/pdf/STATUTE-78-Pg11.pdf |access-date=1 August 2019 |date=February 11, 1964}} Since the independent libraries in York County were now considered to be a county system, the county would be qualified to receive state funding. From this act, the county received a grant of $50,000 for the development of the libraries.{{cite news |title=Library Board To Organize |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/34463817/york_libraries_creation/ |access-date=1 August 2019 |work=York Daily Record |date=26 Jun 1974|via=Newspapers.com}}{{free access}}

In 2018, the Pennsylvania Library Association awarded Paula Gilbert of the York County Libraries their Distinguished Service Award.{{cite web |title=2018 Award Winners - Pennsylvania Library Association |url=https://www.palibraries.org/page/AwardWinners2018 |website=www.palibraries.org |access-date=1 August 2019}} That same year the Martin Library won Library of the Year.{{cite web |title=Pennsylvania Library Association Names Martin Library as Library of the Year {{!}} York County Libraries |url=https://www.yorklibraries.org/2018/10/18/pennsylvania-library-association-names-martin-library-as-library-of-the-year/ |website=www.yorklibraries.org |access-date=1 August 2019}}

In 2019, the library system underwent a $10 million renovation campaign, funded in part through state grants and private donations. The purpose of the renovation was to upgrade the Martin, Kreutz Creek, and Kaltreider-Benfer libraries to include more community spaces, technology, and overall space. This campaign came after an initial $1 million state grant through Pennsylvania's 2018 Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.{{cite news |title=York County libraries get $1 million boost from state |url=https://www.yorkdispatch.com/story/news/2018/09/26/red-lion-library-gets-1-million-boost-state/1425075002/ |access-date=1 August 2019 |work=York Dispatch |date=26 September 2018 |language=en}}
