Many reviewers rated You're Gonna Get It! a notch lower than the band's moderately well-received debut album. Rolling Stone noted the "impressive stylistic cohesiveness" between the two.{{cite news |newspaper=Rolling Stone |issue=273 |date=September 7, 1978 |first=Tom |last=Carson |title=You're Gonna Get It!|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/youre-gonna-get-it-19780907 |access-date=14 September 2011}} The Globe and Mail wrote that Petty "is a pop stylist and makes no bones about rephrasing the musical and lyrical themes which constituted pop (as opposed to rock, rhythm and blues or any of the other) before it got lost in the mires of country-rock and disco."{{cite news |last1=McGrath |first1=Paul |title=Tom Petty |work=The Globe and Mail |date=12 July 1978 |page=F2}}
