From the point of view of a given web resource (referent), a backlink is a regular hyperlink on another web resource (the referrer) that points to the referent.{{cite journal | last1= Björneborn |first1=Lennart |last2=Ingwersen |first2=Peter | year = 2004 | title = Toward a Basic Framework for Webometrics | journal = Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology | volume = 55 | issue = 14 | page = 1218 | url = http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.94.1691&rep=rep1&type=pdf | archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20140910140314/http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/asi.20077/abstract |archive-date=2014-09-10 | doi = 10.1002/asi.20077|citeseerx=10.1.1.94.1691 |access-date=2020-05-27}} A web resource may be (for example) a website, web page, or web directory.

Backlinks are offered in Wikis, but usually only within the bounds of the Wiki itself and enabled by the database backend.{{cite web|url=https://medium.com/@diegosaeztrumper/open-data-and-covid-19-wikipedia-as-an-informational-resource-during-the-pandemic-dcca6a23e826|title=Open data and COVID-19: Wikipedia as an informational resource during the pandemic|last=Sáez-Trumper|first=Diego|website=Medium|date=2020-04-16|access-date=2020-05-27}} MediaWiki specifically offers the "What links here" tool, some older Wikis, especially the first WikiWikiWeb, had the backlink functionality exposed in the page title.{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=HDKA8ViZcpsC&pg=PA111|title=Wiki: Web Collaboration|page=111|last1=Ebersbach|first1=Anja|last2=Glaser|first2=Markus|last3=Heigl|first3=Richard|publisher=Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg|year=2006|isbn=978-3-540-25995-4|doi=10.1007/3-540-29267-5}}
