The Bishop of Stepney is an episcopal title used by a suffragan bishop of the Church of England Diocese of London, in the Province of Canterbury, England. The title takes its name after Stepney, an inner-city district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The post is held by Joanne Grenfell{{Cite web|url=https://www.london.anglican.org/articles/new-bishop-of-stepney-announced/|title=New Bishop of Stepney announced|date=May 7, 2019}} whose consecration as bishop, and start of her tenure as Bishop of Stepney, was on 3 July 2019 at St Paul's Cathedral;{{cite web|url=https://www.london.anglican.org/articles/new-bishop-of-stepney-announced/ |title=New Bishop of Stepney announced | Diocese of London |publisher=London.anglican.org |date=2019-05-07 |access-date=2020-05-14}} the principal consecrator was Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury.{{cite web|url=https://www.london.anglican.org/articles/new-bishop-of-stepney-consecrated-at-st-pauls/ |title=New Bishop of Stepney consecrated at St Paul’s | Diocese of London |publisher=London.anglican.org |date=2019-07-03 |access-date=2020-05-14}}

The first bishop was appointed to take responsibility for North and East London, which had been under the care of the Bishop of Bedford; the new See was erected because the retiring bishop Robert Billing retained the See of Bedford, and Stepney was a more obvious See for the suffragan for the East End.{{Church Times | title = Church news | archive = 1895_04_11_418 | issue = 1681 | date = 11 April 1895 | page = 418 | accessed = 19 September 2020 }} In 1898, the new Bishop of Islington received responsibility for North London.{{Church Times | title = London diocesan conference | archive = 1898_04_29_468 | issue = 1840 | date = 29 April 1898 | page = 468 | accessed = 19 September 2020 }} In the experimental area scheme of 1970, the bishop was given oversight of the deaneries of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, and Islington.{{Church Times | title = Virtual autonomy for London's ‘area bishops’? | archive = 1970_02_20_01 | issue = 5584 | date = 20 February 1970 | page = 1 | accessed = 29 September 2020 }} The Bishops suffragan of Stepney have been area bishops since the London area scheme was founded in 1979.{{cite web|title=4: The Dioceses Commission, 1978–2002|url=http://www.churchofengland.org/media/40670/chapter4.pdf|publisher=Church of England|access-date=23 April 2013|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120607020502/http://www.churchofengland.org/media/40670/chapter4.pdf|archive-date=7 June 2012}}
