History
Corves were originally crucial to keep captured fish fresh until the boat with the catch reached its harbor.{{cite web|last1=Kjellgren|first1=Joachim|title=Ovanligt träföremål i vår frågelåda|trans-title=Question about an unusual object|url=http://www.murberget.se/om-museet/press/nyheter/ovanligt-traefoeremaal-i-vaar-fraagelaada.aspx|website=www.murberget.se|publisher=Länsmuseet Västernorrland|date=22 August 2013|access-date=14 November 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151117022357/http://www.murberget.se/om-museet/press/nyheter/ovanligt-traefoeremaal-i-vaar-fraagelaada.aspx|archive-date=17 November 2015|url-status=dead}} A corf could be towed behind the boat while fishermen made the journey from the fishing grounds to the fish market. These journeys could last up to half a day.{{cite web|title=History|url=https://www.leroyseafood.com/en/Business/About-us/History1/|website=www.leroyseafood.com|publisher=Lerøy|access-date=14 November 2015}} When used for storing eels in Blekinge, Sweden, the corves could be as large as {{convert|3.75|by|1.33|by|0.8|m|ftin|frac=8|abbr=on}} and contain about {{convert|2|MT|ST LT}} of eels. The corf could also be built into the boat, and sometimes be a significant part of it. Fishing boats with a well amidships where water is circulated through small holes in the hull are known as well smacks.{{cite web|last1=Johnson|first1=Lars|title=Åländsk fisksump|trans-title=Well smack from Åland|url=http://www.tugboatlars.se/FisksumpAland.htm|website=www.tugboatlars.se|publisher=tugboatlars.se|access-date=14 November 2015}}{{cite web|title=Well smack for driftnet fishing K. 1213 De tre brødre from Kalvehave|url=http://www.fimus.dk/en/the-good-stories/well-smack-for-driftnet-fishing-k-1213-de-tre-brodre-from-kalvehave/|website=www.fimus.dk|publisher=Fisheries and Maritime Museum, Esbjerg|access-date=14 November 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151117023318/http://www.fimus.dk/en/the-good-stories/well-smack-for-driftnet-fishing-k-1213-de-tre-brodre-from-kalvehave/|archive-date=17 November 2015|url-status=dead}}

Modern fishing boats often have integral corves. These are built into the boat and the water in them kept fresh and oxygenated through a circulatory system with water and air pumps.
