Feral chickens are derived from domestic chickens (Gallus domesticus) who have returned to the wild. Like the red junglefowl (the closest wild relative of domestic chickens), feral chickens will roost in bushes in order to avoid predators at night. {{cite web|author=Tove Danovitch| url=https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2023/05/hawaii-feral-chicken-problem-kauai/674147/|title=Kaui's Feral Chickens Are Out of Control| website=The Atlantic|date=24 May 2023 |access-date=24 May 2023}}
Feral chickens typically form social groups composed of a dominant cockerel, several hens, and subordinate cocks. Sometimes the dominant cockerel is designated by a fight between cocks.{{cite journal|last=Leonard|first=Marty L.|author2=Zanette|date=1998|title=Female mate choice and male behaviour in domestic fowl|journal=Animal Behaviour|volume=56|pages=1099–1105|url=http://publish.uwo.ca/~lzanette/Web_papers/Anim_Behav_ML.pdf|accessdate=2008-04-25|doi=10.1006/anbe.1998.0886|pmid=9819324|issue=5|s2cid=45208700 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20050515222302/http://publish.uwo.ca/%7Elzanette/Web_papers/Anim_Behav_ML.pdf|archive-date=2005-05-15|url-status=dead}}
