Fuse (stylised as fuse*) is a multidisciplinary art studio based in Modena, Italy.
History
fuse* was founded in 2007 by Luca Camellini and Mattia Carretti{{Cite web |date=2016-02-11 |title=Codex Anima Mundi – Interview with FUSE* |url=https://www.creativeapplications.net/maxmsp/codex-anima-mundi-interview-with-fuse/ |access-date=2023-02-10 |website=CreativeApplications.Net |language=en-US}} in Campogalliano, a small town north of Modena, Italy. Friends since childhood, they started mixing their different skills and interests to technically support external organizations and companies after graduating from their respective colleges. Camellini graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and has pursued his passion for computer programming and graphical simulations, whilst Carretti graduated with a degree in Chemistry and later in Business Administration from the Polytechnic University of Milan.{{Cite web |title=Talk: Everything in Existence |url=https://www.unirufa.it/eventi/talk-everything-in-existence/ |access-date=2023-02-10 |website=RUFA - Rome University of Fine Arts |language=it-IT}} Their passion for digital arts, technology and science brought them to merge the three through immersive art installation and artworks. Sound design has always been one of the main pillars of the studio, and in 2009 sound designer Riccardo Bazzoni also joined fuse*.
Snow Fall was the first artistic project realized in 2009 in Modena, which consisted of an interactive installation that processed images of the audience captured by video cameras in real time, displaying the silhouettes of the audience surrounded by snowflakes.{{Cite web |title=Snow Fall |url=https://www.fuseworks.it/works/snow-fall/ |access-date=2024-03-02 |website=www.fuseworks.it |language=en}} This first version was created with infrared cameras while the successive iterations of the work, exhibited in Manchester, UK (2015) and Washington DC, US (2019),{{Cite web |last=Salzano |first=Miabelle |date=2019-01-16 |title=Fuse’s "Everything In Existence" Exhibition Opens At Artechouse |url=https://www.architectmagazine.com/technology/fuses-everything-in-existence-exhibition-opens-at-artechouse_o |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230217103001/https://www.architectmagazine.com/technology/fuses-everything-in-existence-exhibition-opens-at-artechouse_o |archive-date=2023-02-17 |access-date=2024-03-02|website=Architect Magazine |language=EN}}{{Cite web |title=Everything in Existence |url=https://www.artechouse.com/program/everything-in-existence/ |access-date=2024-03-02 |website=artechouse.com/ |language=en-US}} employed new and more modern hardware and software.
In 2011, the studio began to experiment with live performances based on the real-time interaction between sound, movement and light. N 4.0, an art piece which is projected onto a variety of architectural backgrounds, was first presented in 2011 for the Celeste Prize art competition, in which the piece won the award for Live Media/Performance.{{Cite web |title=N 4.0 |url=http://bibliolmc.uniroma3.it/node/1113 |access-date=2023-02-10 |website=bibliolmc.uniroma3.it}}{{Cite web |last=Italy |first=www celesteprize com-Celeste Network- |title=N4.0 - fuse* - Celeste Prize 2011 |url=https://www.celesteprize.com/artwork/ido:75441 |access-date=2024-03-02 |website=www.celesteprize.com}} Continuing to experiment with live performances, fuse* started developing a trilogy composed of Ljòs (Light in Icelandic),{{Cite web |date=2014-06-23 |title=Forget Everything You Knew About The Circus -- This Performance Is Fine Art |url=https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trapeze-performance-music-visuals_n_5522760 |access-date=2023-02-10 |website=HuffPost |language=en}} Dökk (Darkness){{Cite web |last=liminateatri_admin |date=2018-10-10 |title=Fuse* – Dökk, la "creazione" multimediale di Livia Nigro |url=http://www.liminateatri.it/?p=361 |access-date=2023-02-17 |website=Liminateatri |language=it-IT}} and Sál (Soul) in 2014.
