Announced on April 8, 2010, and originally slated for release on June 21, 2010, the actual date was changed to July 1, 2010. iAd was announced at Apple's June 7, 2010, keynote, with an iPad version appearing in the fall.{{Cn|date=March 2023}} Hosted and sold by Apple, the iAd platform was expected to compete with Google's AdMob mobile advertising service.{{cite news |last=Ulanoff |first=Lance |date=April 12, 2010 |title=Apple iAd Platform: A Case of the Rich Getting Richer |work=PCMag |url=https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362512,00.asp |access-date=April 21, 2010 |archive-date=November 21, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171121114440/https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2362512,00.asp |url-status=live }}
Similar to AdMob, iAd facilitates integrating advertisements into applications sold on the iOS App Store.{{cite web |last=Krazit |first=Tom |date=April 8, 2010 |title=Apple strikes back at Google with iAd |url=https://www.cnet.com/culture/apple-strikes-back-at-google-with-iad/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100411110525/http://news.cnet.com/8301-30684_3-20002079-265.html |archive-date=April 11, 2010 |access-date=April 21, 2010 |website=CNet}} If the user tapped on an iAd banner, a full-screen advertisement appeared within the application, unlike other ads that would send the user into the Safari web browser. Ads were promised to be more interactive than on other advertising services, and users were able to close them at any time, returning to where they left their app. Former Apple CEO Steve Jobs initially indicated that Apple would retain 40% of the ad revenue, in line with what he called "industry standard", with the other 60% going to the developers. The amount paid to developers was later increased to 70%. iAd was expected to benefit free applications as well.{{cite web |last=Foresman |first=Chris |date=April 8, 2010 |title=Multitasking (finally), iAd, and more coming in iOS 4.0 |url=https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2010/04/apple-announces-multitasking-and-more-for-iphone-os-40/ |access-date=April 21, 2010 |publisher=Ars Technica |archive-date=August 20, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170820032924/https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2010/04/apple-announces-multitasking-and-more-for-iphone-os-40/ |url-status=live }} The iAd App Network was discontinued as of June 30, 2016.{{Cite web |last=Statt |first=Nick |date=2016-01-15 |title=Apple confirms it's backing away from iAd on June 30th |url=https://www.theverge.com/2016/1/15/10777496/apple-iad-app-shutdown-june-30th-confirmation |access-date=2023-03-28 |website=The Verge |language=en-US |archive-date=December 8, 2022 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20221208142829/https://www.theverge.com/2016/1/15/10777496/apple-iad-app-shutdown-june-30th-confirmation |url-status=live }}
