Intelligence is a bimonthly peer-reviewed academic journal of psychology that covers research on intelligence and psychometrics. Detterman (Case Western Reserve University). The editors-in-chief are Dragos Iliescu and Samuel Greiff.
According to the New Statesman in 2018, the "journal Intelligence is one of the most respected in its field" but has allowed its reputation "to be used to launder or legitimate racist pseudo-science".{{Cite news |last=van der Merwe |first=Ben |date=19 February 2018 |title=It might be a pseudo science, but students take the threat of eugenics seriously |work=New Statesman |url=https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/education/2018/02/it-might-be-pseudo-science-students-take-threat-eugenics-seriously |access-date=2018-12-17}} Smithsonian Magazine called it "a more respected psychology journal", but stated that it has "occasionally included papers with pseudoscientific findings about intelligence differences between races".{{Cite news|last=Skibba|first=Ramin|date=20 May 2019|title=The Disturbing Resilience of Scientific Racism|work=Smithsonian Magazine|url=https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/disturbing-resilience-scientific-racism-180972243/}} It has been criticized for having included on its editorial board biochemist Gerhard Meisenberg and psychologist Richard Lynn, both known as promoters of eugenics and scientific racism.{{Cite news|last=Saini|first=Angela |authorlink=Angela Saini|date=2018-01-22|title=Racism is creeping back into mainstream science – we have to stop it|work=The Guardian|url=https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jan/22/eugenics-racism-mainstream-science|access-date=2018-12-17|issn=0261-3077}}{{Cite news |last=Barnes |first=Tom |date=2018-12-07 |title=Hundreds of academics demand Cambridge investigate researcher accused of publishing 'racist pseudoscience' |work=The Independent |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/cambridge-professor-eugenics-research-investigation-racism-london-conference-intelligence-a8672921.html |access-date=2018-12-17}}{{Cite journal|last=Winston|first=Andrew|authorlink=Andrew Winston|date=29 May 2020|title=Scientific Racism and North American Psychology|url=https://oxfordre.com/psychology/view/10.1093/acrefore/9780190236557.001.0001/acrefore-9780190236557-e-516|journal=Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Psychology|doi=10.1093/acrefore/9780190236557.013.516|isbn=978-0-19-023655-7|url-access=subscription}} The editor-in-chief of the journal defended their involvement on the basis of academic freedom. History
The first issue of the journal was published in January 1977, with Douglas K. Detterman of Case Western Reserve University as editor-in-chief. In 2016, Detterman was replaced by Richard J. Haier.{{cite web |title=Intelligence {{!}} Vol 55, Pages 1-104 (March–April 2016) |url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/intelligence/vol/55/suppl/C |website=www.sciencedirect.com |publisher=ScienceDirect.com by Elsevier |access-date=22 April 2025 |language=en-us}}
In August 2024, Elsevier began a review of work published in its journals, including Intelligence and Personality and Individual Differences, written by Richard Lynn. This review coincided with renewed attention towards scientific racism in academia, and specifically calls for much of Lynn's work to be retracted.{{cite news |last1=Devlin |first1=Hannah |last2=Pegg |first2=David |title=Publisher reviews national IQ research by British 'race scientist' Richard Lynn |url=https://www.theguardian.com/science/2024/dec/10/elsevier-reviews-national-iq-research-by-british-race-scientist-richard-lynn |access-date=22 April 2025 |work=The Guardian |date=10 December 2024}}
