Sans rival is a Filipino dessert cake made of layers of buttercream, meringue and chopped cashews. Its name means "without rival" in French. The cake may be decorated, left plain, or garnished with pistachios.
The cake's origins are disputed. One source claims the recipe has its roots in the French dacquoise,{{cite web|title = angsarap.net|url = http://angsarap.net/2013/03/22/sansrival/|access-date = November 27, 2013|last = Raymund| date=March 22, 2013 }} while Lucy Torres-Gomez, writing in The Philippine Star, claims that the cake is descended from the tarta imperial rusa, the Spanish adaption of a Russian cake which was popular with the Russian Imperial Family.{{cite news | last=Torres-Gomez | first=Lucy | author-link=Lucy Torres-Gomez | title=A sweet story from Russia to Spain to Manila | url=https://www.philstar.com/lifestyle/sunday-life/2009/02/15/440035/lifestyle | work=The Philippine Star | date=February 15, 2009 | access-date=January 4, 2021}}
A similar, smaller version of this recipe is called a silvana.
