History

UNILAG was founded in 1962, two years after the independence of Nigeria from Britain. It was one of the first five universities created in the country, now known as "first generation universities".{{cite web|title=Nigerian Education Profile|url=http://nigeria.usembassy.gov/nigeria_education_profile.html|work=United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria|access-date=15 October 2013|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100317014614/http://nigeria.usembassy.gov/nigeria_education_profile.html|archive-date=17 March 2010}}{{Cite web | url=https://www.blackpast.org/global-african-history/university-lagos-1962/ |title = University of Lagos (1962- ) •|date = 10 December 2011}} Eni Njoku was appointed as the first black vice-chancellor of the university in 1962, and he remained in office till 1965 when he was replaced by Saburi Biobaku. On 29 May 2012, the then President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, proposed to rename the University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University in honour of Moshood Abiola, who died in jail as a political prisoner in 1998. The proposed name change became a subject of protests from students and alumni. The proposal was consequently jettisoned as the Nigerian federal government gave in to the protests incited by the proposed name change.{{cite news|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/africa/nigeria-president-renames-university-after-politician-who-died-in-jail-over-a-decade-ago/2012/05/29/gJQAPvSPyU_story.html|title=Nigeria President renames university after politician who died in jail over a decade ago|date=29 May 2012|newspaper=The Washington Post|access-date=29 May 2012|location=Washington DC, USA}}{{dead link|date=June 2021|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}}{{cite news|url=http://allafrica.com/stories/201205290780.html|title=Students Protest Jonathan's Renaming of UNILAG|date=29 May 2012|work=AllAfrica.com|access-date=29 May 2012}}{{cite news|url=http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/05/jonathan-renames-unilag-moshood-abiola-university/|title=Jonathan renames UNILAG, Moshood Abiola University|date=29 May 2012|work=The Vanguard|access-date=29 May 2012|location=Lagos, Nigeria|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120531202450/http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/05/jonathan-renames-unilag-moshood-abiola-university/|archive-date=31 May 2012|url-status=dead}}
